Question Hammer mount firing pin

I just picked up a Model 60-7 with bobbed hammer. This is my first Smith with a hammer mounted firing pin, and I noticed some play in the firing pin.

How much movement is normal?

The roll pin seems solid from side to side movement.

Thanks

The HMFP needs a bit of up and down play to align itself with the firing pin channel in the frame as the hammer is coming down to its final "fired" position. A tiny bit of side to side play is inevitable.

If you can ride the hammer down with the firing pin as far "up" as possible (hard to do with a bobbed hammer, but turning the gun upside down should help keep the firing pin "up", it should not touch the top of the hammer slot and it should ride smoothly into the firing pin channel and then protrude out into the frame window.

Thumbs up

Thank you sir. My j-snubs have always been centennials, and others have been later models, so this was new for me.

My 696 has a hammer mounted firing pin that can move a bit for alignment too. It's just the way they are. The pin gets guided to exactly the right spot, following the arc of the hammer and compensating for any play in the hammer.
