Default Limited Production Model 500s

A thread I started a long time ago was recently revived and one of the posters said that the 6.5" barreled, unfluted cylinder PC Model 500 like one that I have was rather rare, less than 500 produced if I remember correctly.

I called S&W to check on a order (HiVis front sight for the new .500) and asked about production numbers. Customer service didn't have any such info and quickly sent me over to Roy Jenks, S&W's long time historian.

He said he didn't know either. He said S&W's policy is I sent $50 and he'll research it. Well....call me cheap if you will but since I'm not selling the gun, it isn't worth $50 to me to learn how many were produced, its a shooter, not a safe queen. But, for those who care about such things, Jenks is an option. Don

I have one of those too. It is in fact, a great shooter. I wouldn't spend $50 to just find out production number either. Hove you thought about asking Lew Horton?

Default 500

I have one also and it is a "BLAST" to shoot. I doubt any late model is rare.

My bad, not my first by any means.

Jinks did say that by firearms manufacturer's standards, all the PC .500s are limited production items, whatever that works out to. Don

DonD,

I asked a few questions in that thread about the production numbers. In particular, I was trying to find out if a 6.5 PC 500 in the local shop was the same model as the "rare" model shown in the aforementioned thread. I appreciate you taking the extra time to look into it with S&W. Like you, I'm not interested enough to pay $50 to have it researched.

I have a couple followup questions if you don't mind. Do all 500 PC models have polygonal rifling? I want to make sure I understand your reply in the other thread that all 500s can fire hardcast lead. I've always heard that lead in polygonal barrels (Glock) is a no-no. Is it ok in the polygonal 500s because we are talking about hard cast, or is there another reason?

Thanks again

I'm sure I'm not the only one with a PC .500 Mag that is using hard cast. I've seen no issues with it and yes, I'm quite aware of the concerns in the Glock community regarding polygonal rifling.

S&W also worked with the initial supplier of ammo (don't remember the name) and their load was a 440 gr hard cast @ 1625 fps. Hard for me to conceive that they would produce a specialty model that wouldn't digest hard cast.

I wouldn't want to swear to it but I'm rather confident that early PC .500s were polygonal rifling but I think all of the current production is the ECR (electrochemically cut rifling).

I'll pose this question to my contact at S&W and see what he says. Here again, I'm pretty sure that the ammo they use for durability testing at S&W is hard cast. Don

I believe that Lew Horton sold all of those. Why not just call them and ask.
