I have read good reviews online, but would like to hear from others who have shot it or own one too.

Are its features worth the extra cost over a standard 4" 686?

What did you like and dislike about it?

Too much money for what you get. Have your dealer order one of the new six shot Mountain Gun(s) from Lipsey's. They are priced right in there with the standard 686. If competition is not what you're into you could just buy the standard gun and be happy but the Mountain Gun will weigh in real close to the SSR. I don't care for the space gun look and the action on the one I shot(and lived with for a month.....friend wanted to sell it)was light but gritty AND the thing never would shoot with a standard 686. At the end of a month of shooting and cleaning and tinkering I gave it back; just could't learn to like it.

I like the weight, action, balance, finish, look, and the way mine shoots. Other than that I have nothing to recommend it .

I like it so much I'm going to get a second one.

I've been looking into getting one of these to play with. I love the look and feel of the gun in the hand. The grips kinda force your grip up high which I like. It helps to control recoil and get back on target faster.

I've tried searching SSR in the search and it for some reason doesn't like it

I like everything about mine, worth the money to me.

I have owned one since shortly after they came out, I would say it has 3 to 4 thousand rounds on it. It is smooth and accurate. If you are thinking of match shooting the chamfered charge holes are a big plus. They (SSR) will not please everyone but what model does? I got mine for 699 bucks, don't know what they sell for now however.

I agree with Wayne. Way overpriced and just not made like the earlier pre-lock 686. For competition the Mountain Gun is a better option. If your not going to compete then why not buy a 686 pre-lock model? One of the early dash models are the best. Has a better trigger than the new 686s.

I purchased a 686SSR and have enjoyed it so much I adopted its model number as my S&W Forum log-in name. Yes, some do not care for its looks, but that's simply a personal preference. I found its unique styling and the SSR's fit and finish irresistible. But, the most important issue is how does it shoot? The revolver is very very accurate and easy to shoot well. I am sure this is due in large part to its extremely crisp and clean-breaking trigger. Would I recommend it? Definitely. Would I consider owning another? Of course. The only thing that could change my mind is that the 686SSR has got me lusting after its "little brother" - the 60 Pro.

I have had one for several months and recommend it to anyone that asks. I frequently carry it on duty. Seems to out shoot many of my older S&W revolvers (I know, I know, Blasphemy). I am going to get a spare as soon as funds allow.

I have shot my friend's SSR and I really like it. Balance seems right for my taste. Standard S&W's don't come with chamfered cylinders. This is a real plus for competition reloads.

Any good smith's do this on 686's? Smith & Wesson custom shop? Anyone know a price, curious.

The magwell on my 1911 is a must have in IDPA, and it sounds like the chamfered cylinder is rather nice as well.

I love mine - smooth and more accurate than I am. I stuck with the Uncle Mike's rubber stocks which feel better in my hand than the wood set. Ialso stuck a CS combat site on it. I bought this when I was looking for a 620. I prefer a semi-lugged barrel over the full and heavy standard 686 barrel. Looking for a picture.

The SSR is one of my favorite Smiths and the one that I carry most often when afield. I carry it in a Safariland upside down shoulder holster and it is comfortable for all day carry. I like the way it handles and is the most natural pointing revolver I have. It shines in the accuracy department too!
