I bought a 6" 617 Friday to go with my 4" 617, and also for my son to use for Bullseye competition. Zeroed it when I got home, and my son shot 10 rounds @ 25 yard Bullseye. As he was shooting, the hammer seemed hard to pull back all of the way. (the last stage of the cocking process) When I cleaned it, I applied a couple of drops of RemOil into the action with the hammer cocked back. Today he shot Bullseye with it and cocking the hammer wasn't AS bad, but did seem a slight bit rough. The problem we had today was the trigger returning to normal position after the hammer fell. After pressing the trigger again, it returned to normal. This happened 3 times during a 40 shot session. When I cleaned it, I applied a few drops of oil into the action with the trigger back and also in the normal resting position.

Is this a major mechanical problem or do the surfaces where the hammer and trigger meet need a little breaking in? I did notice after we shot Friday that the inside area with the hammer cocked back looked bone dry. Should I shoot 300-400 rounds through it and see if the lubrication helps before I call S&W? Any advice appreciated.

Since stainless has a rep for needing to be broken in, and I've witnessed it firsthand, the break in idea is IMO a good one. Also, when stainless is machined, there can be small little stringers of stainless left behind. Perhaps blowing out the action with gun scrubber or canned air might help - just sort of reaching for a possible solution. If all else fails, S&W will definitely resolve the problem for you. They both have the lock unfortunately.

Shot the 617 today. 37 rounds and 6 times the trigger stuck in the rearward position. The hammer was at times difficult to cock. S&W is sending a shipping label. I bought a 4" 617 last year and had misfire problems. Now this! Why don't they get it right before it leaves the factory. I've never had any problems with S&W centerfire revolvers. Oh well, live and learn---they don't make em like they used to.

Shouldn't happen with a new gun, especially a Smith and Wesson.

Basically, it re-inforces My desire to buy only pre-lock, pre-MIM Smith revolvers.

It's a long shot but check and see if your side plate screws are loose. If they are that can let the rebound slide get out of alignment and prevent the trigger from returning to its normal position.

S&W will take care of it. But before calling I would have removed the side plate and checked to see if there was particulates from the manufacture process gumming up the works. Now that S&W is involved let them take care of it.

If it were my revolver I would first use the lock key and fully engage the the lock, and then fully disengage the lock and see if that solves the problem. If not, I would not remove the side plate. I would return it to Smith & Wesson and let them make it right. I'm sure they will do that. JMO

hi just bought a 617 4" had multiple problems at first shoot i sent it back will they fix all the problems . Ie trigger stuck misfires, ejection rod stuck

Yes they will fix them - if you tell them everything that's wrong, and you won't need to dig up a 7 year old thread to get them to do it either.

You seem to say it has problems when shooting, how about when empty?

If just when shooting, are you by chance using Winchester or Browning ammo? I've had problems with that ammo lately binding all my 617's, they have been swelling up near the rim and then start binding the cylinder making it hard to pull the hammer and trigger.

Just a thought.

Could be a tight tooth or 2 on the extractor star. As trigger is pressed gun cylinder locks up just before firing. Fires, but as the ratchet tooth is long the hand gets bound up between ratchet tooth and tooth's window in frame. As the hand is stuck it won't let the trigger reset.

I am not shy about taking off the side plate and cleaning up the internals of a new or used gun. There are plenty of videos on line showing "how-to". Just use good and right sized screw drivers for the screws.
