Default Model 638 - "painted" finish?

I've been toying with the idea of a 638 bodyguard to add to my collection. My LGS has one which has a black finish. The owner says all the 638s are "painted" (his word not mine) so my holding out for a stainess finish is a waste of time. He says even the "silver"looking models are actually just a finish coating, not stainless.

Can anyone verify, or is he just pulling my chain, trying to get rid of stock he has?

THX

The 638 has a silver painted/clear coated frame and a stainless steel cylinder and barrel.

The 649 is an all stainless steel version of the Bodyguard.
