Default Looked at a Scandium .357 today

Stopped in a sporting goods store on the other side of town for some reloading accessories and was checking them out while killing time.

12 ounces! Wow, how light.

My SP101 weighs 32 loaded and its recoil is intense. Hate to think about what those Scandiums must be like.

But I'd love to try it.

My 340 PD hurts with Federal 125 grn..357 loads, which is what I carry in it. Blazer 158 grn..357 aren't that bad at all. I even fired a cylinder of them left (non -dominant) handed only. I wouldn't want to shoot it all day, but for a carry gun it's great.

Here's what it feels like:

Hold a heavy hammer by the head with your left hand. Open your right hand and whack the hell out of the palm with the handle of the hammer.

That's the best I can describe it.

Oh, and make sure that there are a couple of sharp edges on the hammer handle so after four or five hits you're bleeding.

Painful to shoot, yes, BUT there's nothing more comforting than five rounds of 357 Mag in a package you can carry your front pocket.

I dunno why everyone has trouble with 357's in their j frames? I mean I don't go out and shoot 100 rounds of the stuff but 25 rounds is fine for me. I don't have big meaty mitts either. I guess it just doesn't bother me that much. Although the CT grips I have do make for a lot more comfortable grip.

If you handload you can come up with something that will do the job, but is fun to shoot. I feed my 340PD and 360PD a load midway between +P and factory .357 that's enjoyable to shoot. If you must buy your ammo, the GDSB's aren't bad, just expensive.

When I mention shooting my 340pd while I am at the gun shop. One of the gents there who was in the special forces in Israel, drops his head and says"thats brutal". I don't think of it as painful my self. I like to refer to it as "trauma". The longer I own it, I find the less I shoot it.

Personally, I'll admit it, I am a total wimp. I used to find shooting a 2 1/2 inch model 19 with 357 Magnums to be brutal. As for a hot Magnum in a 12 ounce gun, I may try it for just one shot if the Cleveland Browns ever win the Super Bowl, twice and back to back. In other words, aint never gonna happen.

Just for the record, and to keep it all straight, all of the 3xx series guns weren't created equal. I agree the J frame guns are more than a handful. But if you step up to the L frame 386 you get an entirely different monster. It comes from God with a full size handle and that makes it much more pleasant (OK, less unpleasant) to fire. The difference is its pretty controllable once you've mastered it.

And breaking with my tradition of loving old guns and hating the new ones, I really like the scandium offerings. We all have different tolerance levels for recoil. It doesn't matter if we're talking handguns, or magnum rifles. The trick is to learn your abilities and custom tailor the gun to match them.

With J frame guns, I simply have learned to use .38 specials. For play/practice, I even prefer wadcutters. With the N frame guns, I just shoot 44 Specials. I always take along a gun load of full house magnums for the macho guys who think they can shoot them. I've even got a couple of boxes of 20 nice 300 grain magnums! So far no one has even bothered to fire a second one. One's enough.

I have to agree with MStgG. I bought one and liked it so much I went and bought another. I carry 125 gr. Speer Gold Dot HP and double taps are easily managed. The first time I shot my gun I hit a 6"x8" steel plate at 25 yards. The guns will only be as accurate as the handler. The only round that I found that hurt was the 140 gr. Leveraction and I still have 19 left. If I were you I would keep it, if you don't want to keep it p.m. me.
rburg, I also have a S&W 2 1/2" mod 29 backpacker in .44 mag. I always practice with Win 240 gr. magnum sjsp loads (1175fps.) and carry the Hornday 300 gr. when hiking. While I find the 300 gr. stout, they are not unpleasant. Of course, I would never carry anything other than a factory load for personal protection. My personal phylosophy is that if I cannot quickly and accurately (less than 2 seconds) place two shots into a B-29 target at 10 yards the gun and or round is two powerful for me. It does not mean that I am attempting to act macho or another person is less macho. YMMV.

i have had a 340pd for a long time. in my humble opinion, it is the ultimate carry weapon. i have tried several different rounds in it, but have basically settled on the 158 gr hydra-shok. there is no question that this round is an effective personal defense load.

the recoil is evidently very subjective. i am just average sized, with an average/small size hand, and i have never thought it was that violent. it definitely MOVES, (and there is nothing you can do about it!), but i don't find it as painful as several folks seem to. it seems to rotate pretty stoutly, as opposed to a powerful "rearward" push. it definitely bangs your trigger finger around in the triggerguard. i guess it behaves kinda like you would expect a potent 357 that weighs 12 ounces to behave! it must just come down to how it fits your hand, and what kind of recoil you find reasonable.

that being said, i am nearing my fifth decade, and i have never had to fire any weapon under any dire circumstance whatsoever. so basically, any personal defense/carry that i have ever done is just that: CARRY!the shape, size, and weight(!!!) of these little guys is unbelieveable. it is about as unobtrusive as any gun i have ever carried. i probably wouldn't consider it only on the merits of weight and "carry-ability", but as long as i find its recoil tolerable, and the fact that it is definitely a "no-questions asked" chambering, it quickly jumps to the top of the heap for me!!!

I've got a 340sc and simply hated the original Hogue grips that it came with. However, once I got CT grips the situation changed completely. As you can see in the picture, the grips extend beyond the metal frame and provide much better cushioning after the round is fired. Mind you, this is not a gun I will fire 100 rounds at the range, but 25-round sessions are doable.

This has definitely become a gun to grab as I head out for an errand.

The M29 is made from good ole steel. So's the barrel and cylinder. Some time try those same rounds in a 329 Scandium AirLite. A world of difference.
