Default Managed to deadline my 442

I'm heading to St. Louis for a few days tomorrow and thought it would be a good idea to shoot the two handguns I planned on taking with me. I took my Gen4 Glock 19 and my new production 442 no lock to the range, also took my 642 no lock so to check the LaserGrips were still dead on.

Got 60rds. through the 642 with no problems, same for the G19 (250rds.), but the 442 only got 20rds. before the cylinder wouldn't close. I instantly thought I had some unburned powder under the extractor so went to check and a spring flew out of the gun and hit the ground. I found it and picked it up and thought "where the hell could that have come from?" and proceded to clean under the extractor with a toothbrush from my cleaning kit. But the idea of that spring having to have come from the 442 kept perplexing me till I looked and saw this.

The locking bolt pin had come out along with the locking bolt and its spring. Found the spring and the pin but couldn't find the locking bolt.

I snapped these pics with my iPhone at the range after calling S&W about returning it. He said he would email me a shipping label to print off.
Glad this happened at the range and not in a possible self defense shooting. Especially so far away from all my other "replacements". You never know when Mr. Murphy will rear his ugly mug at you.

Here's the Gen4 G19 just so I can show it off.

That absolutelty bites.

As you said, it's certainly great the failure occured on the range and not in a defensive situation. I actually think it's a good sign that it occured early on and can be fixed and the gun returned in perfect condition.

Update the post when you can as things progress with the gun.

FWIW i just recieved my 'order status update' from Buds this morning that my 442 (no lock) is in the 5 day check clear period with a ship date on the 7-26. I'm going to give it w thorough range work out with it as soon as possible....hopefully to uncover any simular issues.

I love the G19 4th Gen, too. I've toyed with the idea of a baby GLOCK but the truth of is the G26 just doesn't work in my bear paws...but the G19 is the smallest I can get my mitts on.....probably use G17 mag with spacer on it.

Did your G19 come with 3 mags? I've heard the new ones are boxed with 3 15rd mags.

Love the handy iphone as well. Nothing can take photos....flip to photobucket or simular and post on threads as swiftly like the current smartphones. Been an iPhone owner for the past year.

I finished the range session today with only 20rds. through that 442 taking me to 601rds. total through it. Guess I'll be taking the 642 after all.

The Gen4s all come with 3 mags, Gen3s still come with only 2. I'm a LEO so usually get blue label Glocks and they come with 3 mags anyway. I also have a Gen4 G17 and G22. They are all good shooters in my opinion and I love the updates they did to them.

That last picture proves the most important thing to know about shooting Airweights... Always have a bandaid handy!

Learned that the hard way! After shooting 50-100rds. apiece in two different snubbies at the range you will use a bandaid too! Otherwise the resulting painful blister will be there for a couple weeks. Cheap insurance for sure.

I'll keep the bandaid thing in mind when my 442 arrives. I'm sitting on 3 boxes of .38spcl swc fodder to run through it as well as some hot carry loads to ensure good funciton and point of impact.

That first range session is going to be a bit more brutal on the gun after reading this thread. I'm not trusting something as my ccw unless it's solid.

Thanks for the warning.

Glad to be of assistance.

I usually shoot 200 to 300 rounds a session and they come in handy.

When I took the J-frame armorer course, they talked about putting a slight bend in the small pin that retains the locking bolt; if it shows any tendency to back out.

Just got off the phone with S&W. My 442 will be back Thursday via FedEx. 7 days, not bad.

That isn't something that happens often, but it can happen. I've only seen it happen once with a S&W revolver since I started shooting them. It was an older M60 owned by another cop.

I think the last time I updated my revolver parts inventory I added a single set of those replacement parts, just in case. I doubt I'll use them, though.

Default Similar Problem -- Averted (hopefully)

Just took delivery of a brand new 442 -- noticed the pin holding the ejector lock-up assembly was protruding excessively to the right side. Carefully adjusted the pin and "punched" it back near flush. FYI, I've attended two armorer training programs -- one sponsored by S&W. Hopefully that minor adjustment will solve any future issues. FYI, I own several J, K, L and N frames (also pre-1980) -- never had an issue -- not one. S&W QC has taken a bit of a nose dive.

I think ~everyone's~ QC has taken a nose dive. I can't think of one product out there that is as good or better than it was ten years ago.

Got it back. They ended up replacing the barrel since I had clumsily dropped my 442 awhile back and one of the scars it suffered was on the barrel's crown. I hadn't noticed any affect on accuracy and asked if they could just smooth up the rough edge created by the fall. I didn't even care if they refinished it, but they ended up replacing it. Oh well, that'll work!

Those with a sharp eye might notice something different from the other barrel.
442s in the past had the front sight profile in the above pic, but newer no lock ones seem to be coming with ones like in my first post's pic. That hook shape at the top is the style on 642s. Those barrels/front sights on new no lock 442s were marked with an S on the underside of the barrel and were stainless with a black finish applied. When they replaced my barrel it is the older style and carbon steel.

Sonny,

Just for future reference, loss of the locking bolt has no effect on finction or safety. You could have just as well ordered the locking bolt, spring and pin and replaced this yourself. Sometimes the locking bolt does need to be fit, however.

Sounds like overall you made out real well!

Someone else mentioned this before. I wasn't sure. I know Colt made revolvers without them in the past. I saw how to fix it but since it was loose enough to fall out figured I better have the experts fit it right for me. The locking bolt would have only cost me $4-$5 from Brownells with my discount btw.

Sonny,

You just gave me something to look at on my new 442 Pro. Only downside is if I remember to look when home again in 6 mos.

M14 magazines. No reason to worry about fake USGI now that we have CMI.

My new no-lock 442-2 has the "hook" front sight but the barrel has no S mark. Serial CNS59XX, spent case pack dates 4/6/2010.

My 442-1 Pro Series (no lock) frame serial number is CNX96XX, shipped from Smith and Wesson on 30 June 2010. Its got the "hook" and different barrel labeling then your new barrel Sonny. Right side of the barrel is clean/unmarked. Didn't take any pictures of under the barrel however, or notice the date on the fired case (sitting in the safe some 7300 miles from me).

CD,

Your pic is how all 642s look and how my 442 used to look.

This thread prompted me to check my 442's. The pin on my no lock protrudes out farther on the right side as well. Can you just take a brass punch and seat it a little better? My IL 442 is fine. I am envious about the barrel Sonny Crockett. My no lock 442 has the S marked barrel with the "hook" on the front sight. I don't care for it aesthetically. My IL 442 has the older style carbon steel barrel which I like a lot better. I wish S&W would install a barrel like that on my no lock 442. I'd gladly pay for that swap. When I have inquired in the past about such things as refinishing an alloy J-frame they always say it can't be done due to the barrel having to be removed. They stated to me that the risk of the frame cracking when reinstalling the barrel is too great. Go figure! I'm glad you got your 442 back in working order.
