Default J Frame serial number question

I recently had a brief look at what I think is a Model 36, although I did not see a model designation. The grips appear to be original to the gun, the right panel is stamped with the s/n, but it is stamped 9XX Y
and the J is there, but not in line with the rest of the s/n. The numbers are stamped, not in pencil.

Grips are the later type - no diamond around the screw.
The s/n on the butt is 9XXJY but the "JY" are struck slightly larger and deeper than the 9XX.

At first I thought the JY had been added at some later date, but since the s/n is on the grip, I assume it is original.

I do not see this s/n range in my SCSW.
