NY-1 Model 64 question

Is this right.

I recently picked up a Model 64 NY-1. Inside the crane it is stamped “Mod. 64” – no dash. It has a hammer mounted firing pin and the barrel is not pinned. The serial number is BHJ69xx.

I thought all the NY-1 64’s were dash 4 or 5?

yep they are

most are 64-5, atleast all the one's i saw and purchased at the NYPD equipment section(starting from 1988). if you have a pic I can help,

NYPD did not sell any model 64's with no dash.

a bunch of fakes are still around, look at the NY-1 stamp it should line up. And after 1990 or 1991 they are laser engraved.

As to fakes, I doubt it. This was in the big lot of NY-1’s at J&G in Prescott AZ -- Smith & Wesson Model 64 NY1 38spl, 4inch, Vapor hone finish, very good condition

wow that's a first, it looks real to me, I have a bunch that I picked up over the years and none have (MOD 64). Most of mine are 64-5, Also that serial number is for a 64, maybe around from 1989 or 90. Around that time they had that bean blast finish or vapor hone finish, maybe someone could chime in with a closer born on date.

when in doubt call S&W they will tell you if it was delivered to NYPD.

Good luck with it they are fine shooters, a few go to the range with me all the time.
and some have HD duty.

It's not like they're worth counterfeiting, I bet it is a 64-4 (mine is a 64-4, BEK prefix. Before yours) or -5 stamped too far over to the side. It's happened before. joe

People are faking NY-1 Model 64's???

Is the effort to stamp an "NY-1" on a 64 worth the extra $30 in resale, maybe? Most shooters who buy these used as utility guns could care less if it has NY-1 on it, only the most dedicated PD gun or S&W collector would pay any kind of premium for one of these.

People aren't going to be paying $1,000 for DAO Model 64's anytime soon, most fakers go after "big game" like Nazi marked stuff, I guess the bottom feeders are going after PD trade in revolvers now.

no, a gun store on Long Island was banned by NYPD in the late 80's for that. I guess they would sell so many more 64's with the stamp since the stock version was not authorized. The actions were horrrible. You see they sent out the frames or did it in house to put a bogus stamp, then mixed up the yokes and cylinders upon re assembly making action with alot of binding. so many got turned down by the range, they stopped authorizing all sales from that store. I witnessed a bunch at Rodmans Neck range.
They took advantage to alot of young officers.

BHJxxx works out to 1991-92, the -1's ceased in 1977. I highly doubt that gun is a -1 unless it was laying on the shelf at the factory for 14 years.
As pharmer mentioned, the strike ended up off the frame.
The "frosted" look came towards the end of production also, early NY-1's were the standard brushed stainless.

yes Ladder the last one I purchased from NYPD was the last batch with the vapor hone finish and laser NY-1
# BFWXXXX. 64-5 ( I will find the bill of sale should be around 1991)

The serial number and vapor finish makes it clear that this was a dash 5 gun (I have a dash 6 and it has a frame mounted FP).

But I have trouble seeing the possibility that the - 5 was just off the crane. One's I've seen with various dashes always had the ‘Mod.’ above the series number when there was a dash leaving enough room below for the whole number.

Sort of makes me wonder if maybe the crane was replaced.

Probably not but it would be interesting to see if others appear like this.

I picked one up yesterday, and it has the same markings as yours. Also, mine is very close in S/N sequence. However, it does seem odd that the -5 would have been stamped too for to the right

I have 5 model 64s, I think I will mark NY-1 on them to see if they shoot better, Model 64s are SO inexpensive I can`t Imagen wasting time faking any markings. Who would care, Maybe I could put 1899 on one and claim It was the first
