681 price check
One locally and he's asking $600.00 OBO
I'm assuming the football grips didn't come on this model???
He says it's stamped NYSP---NY State Police.
I was thinking a fair offer would be $450.00. That sound reasonable??
Thanks.

450 sounds reasonable to me.That's about what I paid for mine. 600 sounds high for a police marked gun.

Someone would pay $600 for it if it's NYSP marked. Maybe not right now, but that guy knows he will find a buyer.
The older target grips are not original, but either a private owner or the NY State Trooper who carried it may have added them on. The grips alone are worth about $100.
681's are not common, and NYSP marked examples are desirable.
I would offer $450 but don't be surprised if he doesn't take it. Holster worn 581's are going for those kind of prices.

I paid $600.00 for mine but it was new old stock and had everything in the box! Seems high for a used gun. Saw one local at $475.00.

I agree with others, 600 is high, 450 would be quite reasonable. Offer 550, sell the targets here for 100 bucks, and you got the 681 for what you originally wanted to pay.

The NYSP marked guns tend to command a premium for whatever reason, maybe because they have a documented history. The 681 is the revolver that was chosen by the NYSP instead of their originally ordered model, the 520, and the 520's are VERY collectible.
Someone with a 520 would likely pay the $600 to complete the "set". There are only so many NYSP marked 681's out there, and the 681 is already a harder to find gun. The only question is, is the seller willing to wait for a buyer like this, or does he want to sell now? Only one way to find out, make an offer!

Just bought a like new 681 for $400 out the door.
No line, or end shake with great timing and lock up.

If it is NYSP marked someone will eventualy pay it,
or he may come down some, but dont expect to get $100 bucks for those grips, their not diamonds and not in particulary good condition, i would think $25-$35
also where are you located, i know KSP marked guns sell fast here in KY, if your in NY or he has it listed online it may sell faster than if it was located in, say here in kentucky.

Scheduled for a FTF today.
I asked him if it had the M stamp, he said he'd check and get back with me.
Not done that so far....so, if it hasn't been modified, does S&W do that at no charge? Pay shipping both ways?

I had heard S&W still does the update to these guns for free but I am not 100% sure, or if the recall even applies to the 681's.
Neither of my early 581's are M stamped and I have not had any problems. The recall applied to some 586's that were locking up with .357's when the primer flowed around the bushing........only a small number were affected by this issue but S&W issued an open recall on the guns. I have a 586-2 that is unaffected by this recall, so I don't know if it's the "no dash" or -1 586's that are eligible for the free modification.

I would pay up to 500, or maybe a few more sheckles, but I'm from NY.
Stan, my 681-0 is M stamped.

M stamp recall still applies. Just had my 681 done in March, 2012.
Smith paid shipping both ways. Took eleven days door to door.

Did you have to use a FFL for this?

No FFl needed. I contacted smith-wesson and they sent me a shipping label.
Boxed gun and took it to Fedex. When Smith-Wesson was about to ship it back
they contacted me by email and told me what day it would arrive. Have to sign
for it. They will also contact you by email when they recieve it and will give you a work order number. It was real simple to do. Go to their website customer service and it tells
you what to do. Its best if you talk to someone at smith to get shipping label. Make
sure you say it is a recall and not warranty. Gun has no warranty.
