almost better than sex...
My 3 inch 66-4 and my 66-3 f-comp with 2 digit ser# are so sweet that I sometimes think my wife is jealous, just because they sleep next to me. It doesn't get any better than that.Well maybe the19 pr and 66 2.5 , the 4 and 6 inch might get a little jealous, but a mans got to do what a mans got to do. Now if only Smith would make a lightweight 3- 66 it would be the perfect all time mate.. Well better stop there before I have to share the couch with the cat.

You guys with these 3 inchers need to put one in the For Sale forum so I can buy one! The 3 inch 686+ would be nice if I could choose. The only one's I've seen have been the ones with the IL and don't really want to go there.
BTW, Rolan-That is one beautiful .45.

I could go for a 610 3" to go with my 629 3" that's for sure.

DAdams, what a great score!
Vfeldman, that's a cryin' shame! But it's probably happened to some of us too.
Nice 3-inchers everybody.

Love my 3" 686
I got tired of looking and had my 686-3 6" reworked. I had a 3" barrel installed, ultimate duty tune, and bead blast finish. I toyed with the idea of converting to round butt, but decided against it. I'm very pleased with the work and the gun has great balance.

Sam,
I've got several 3 inch guns, but not a 686-4 I lust for one. That is just perfection. You're a lucky man.

Just bought a 27-2 3.5 inch this weekend. It is 97-98% with box, papers and tool kit. Paid 950 for it. Think I paid market price for it. Will take some pics when I get it out of jail.

Howdy 649Guy,
Those grips were made by Keith Brown. Here's the link to his website.
He does incredible work and is a great guy.

I reluctantly bought a 3" 686 as my first gun because my preferred shop didn't have a 4" in stock (and everyone seemed to think of the 4" as the ultimate size). But he gave me a deal on it (seeing it as an oddball size I suppose), $90 less than what the 4" would sell for, so I bought it.
Now I'm glad I did. Feels great in the hand - even better than the 4" models I had handled at other stores.
And heck, anyone can have a 4" 686, right?

I'll have to whip up something nice to tote it around in. Not sure what yet, but I'll make up something!

Here's one I traded for couple months ago. I've only shot .44 Specs in it so for. It must be a monster with .44 Mags. I have one of the .357 8 shot Niteguards with the light weight scandium frame. Not a fun gun to shoot. Full house .357 about wrecks my hand. I'll stick with .44 Specs in my BBBG.

Let the madness continue
At least until I decide to sell my 3" 65!
Which is likely to be never.
Seriously though, the 3 inchers are compromise guns - too long for a snubby, too short for a service revolver.
Maybe if you're going to own just one, but who of us does that?
I bought mine some years back at a good price because it does look cool, but then couldn't figure out exactly what to do with it.
It's heavier than a 2 inch K frame for concealed carry, and not quite as easy to shoot at the range or in IDPA as a four incher.
So mine ends up as a house gun cause it fits in the lock box I use better than a 4 inch revolver.
Still, I wouldn't sell it unless I was broke.
Let the madness continue!

My first two 3"-ers - a new 696 from 1/03 followed a bit later by my 3" 63 11/10, shown sporting some 60 Pro stocks:
That 3" 63 was followed quickly by a 3" 60 Pro (1/11):
Somewhere, back around the 696 acquisition, I bought a PR airport security guard 3" 65 - unused, except as a wheel chock (It was scratched - cleaned up nicely externally - innards looked unused!). I custom fitted some rounded fg Hogue wood grips to my wife's hand, and it was hers. She hated it. I sold it - she 'acquired' my 2" 10, bought new 9/03 ($280 - CDNN - also, a new 6" 66 $350 - those were the days!), put those fitted Hogues on it and declared it perfect - and hers! Gotta keep 'em happy!

BIG BUMP....wiping the dust off a great thread. Since my last post here, i have added a few to the collection...still have the 66-4 (on top).
The N-frames on the left side... 625-3, and 629-1.
The L-frames... 696-1, and CS-1.

Hey all, this is my second post so please bare with me. I had shoulder surgery here about 4 weeks ago and decided i need something other than a semi auto for a carry weapon just incase I looked like a victim with my arm in an immobilization brace, since I wouldnt have the ability to " tap, rack, boom " if the need came. A couple years back I had a short barrel security six that I liked but it didnt shoot worth squat, so foolishly I let it go instead of adapting it to my needs. About 3 days before I went under the knife I found a used 64-3 for 400.00$ I went for it and found it in near pristine condition. About a week after the surgery I was able to put it thru its paces at my LGS. Even with the bulk of my brace I was able to draw and fire with easy and put the twelve rounds i fired into the face at 21 feet. All I can say is, its a keeper and will not leave my side even after I am healed. The only thing I regret is that I sold all the leather I had for a 3 inch barrel and I am playing hell trying to replace any of it !

since the barrels are measured from the end of the cylinder, and the 24 has a shorter cylinder than say a 29, it makes the 3" barrel look shorter than the barrel of a 3" 29

My first 3-inch L-frame revolver, a 686-6.
It must have been built on a Friday 'cause its got an extra hole in the cylinder and an extra hole near the cylinder release...

Here is my M65-4 with 3" barrel. When I got it the gun was wearing snow tires. I replaced them with Ahrends retro combats that I re-shaped slightly and finished in Tru-Oil.
The holster is an older Bianchi Cyclone.

I love the balance of 3" K frames as well as the asthetics. We'll soon find out if 3" J Frames are just as handy, I have a pinned barrel 3" RB 36 on the way from the east coast. The short list of S&W revolvers that I want to find include a 3" Model 13 and 3" Model 625.
Model 64-3
Model 65
Model 10-8
