A GUY WALKS INTO A PAWN SHOP
Ok, it was me. I stopped at a pawn shop just to check things out. I am looking at the hand guns and rifles that are on display and the owner says "I have a Smith and Wesson and a Taurus 44 that are eligible to be put out today."
Well, right away I really perk up.
All of these different model S & W 's are going through my head. Trying to keep a calm voice I ask "May I look at them?"
He returns with two stainless revolvers, the Taurus in a 6 inch 44, and the other a S&W 617 no dash, 6 inch wearing a really nice set of combat grips.
When I looked at the Smith, I could hardly contain myself.
I asked on prices and he was gone about 5 minutes, which seemed like forever.
He gave me the prices and without trying to beat him down, I said that I would take the 617.
Now, I do not need another 617 but this thing was beautiful.
The finish is great and the grips have really good grain and are like new. I just could not help myself.
I am going to have to stay out of pawn shops and gun shops. This habit is beating the heck out of me.

If it were not for pawn shops selling guns, I would be about a half million dollars richer.
I always feel there are some good deals to be had off the misfortune of others. It seems like you got one of those deals.

Why is it when I do the pawn shop crawl all I can find are ratty model 10's and 28's that looked they've been dragged behind a truck down a gravel road all with asking prices that are more than what a new one would sell for?

What a find! Our local pawn shops do not sell guns. Ah what a sweet day it would be to walk into one and find a 617.

I would say "if you ever want to sell those grips", but to be honest I would feel guilty if you sold them to me.
I have a somewhat similar 617 find. In my case it was s 617 no dash like yours, however it was equipped with an Aimtech sideplate mount, Hogue rubbers cut away to clear that mount, and a Laseraim Illusion Red Dot. Thus the interest in those grips. However, since I'd feel too guilty buying your grips, I'm thinking that Hogue Rosewood or Cocabolo will look nearly as good.

Nice find, congrats. My 617 is definitely one of my favorites. Wish we could walk into pawn shops in NJ to buy guns.

Are those getting that hard to find? ( As I try and remember what I did with the couple of brand new sets I used to have.......)
