Default how accurate is your 617

I have a 617-6 10 shot 6" barrel ,shooting at 23 yds.clamped in a vise sighting with a red dot shooting 3 different types of ammo(CCI stingers, federal bulk and winchester 333)the best group I can get is about2.5" with the federals and stingers I think this gun should do much better than this.

Try some standard velocity target ammo like CCI Green tag, or some Eley if you can find it.

My 617 will do an inch or better with good ammo.
I do not mean real expensive, but standard velocity
target type stuff, I have real good luck with Eley
stuff in a purple box I can not remember name maybe "sport"
It only costs $30-$35.00 for 500
Or another inexpensive type is federal Automatch
I buy it at Walmart, $14.47 for 325 I believe.
Midway has it too. But always is out when I check.
The secret is lower velocity , at least a little higher price.

I shoot with a 2-handed, unsupported grip, DA predominantly - and get 1" to 1 1/2" groups with my 4" 617 at 25' to 30'. The 617 is one of the guns I take to the range when I need a little confirmation, ... and it never fails. I shoot it as well as my 6" K22 - and 4" Model 18. CCI Mini-Mags work fine in the 617.

Wow I would be disappointed with that too.

I'm with J-38 on this one. When I want to see if I'm still shooting anywhere near what I'd call decent I take the 617 out.

I agree I've seen a world of difference with different ammo.

So far Eley has been one of the best.

Just for shootin I use the El Cheapo Remington from WalMart. That stuff is all over but honestly I think it is still a little better than what you have goin.

Any chance maybe the rear sight is loose ?? I just went through this with my 686 and 625. For the lack of a better word I had a messed up elevation nut in both pistols. The threads just would not hold.

ALL .22's are ammo sensitive. I have long competed with both .22 match rifles as well as revolvers and autos. There is NO logic to it. The trick is to get as many different boxes of ammo as possible. Then test it in good conditions. Take the ammo that works well for you and get the lot# from the box, go back where you bought it and buy a case. THAT way you'll have a good shooting combination for a decent amount of time.

I borrowed a friends ransom rest last weekend to shoot my 617 no dash 6 shot.

With Federal bulk pack ammo I was shooting about an inch and a half. Then I switched to Wolf match ammo and the groups shrunk to an inch at 25 yards.

Mine is scoped with a bushnell 2-7 and will consistently print 1-1.5 inch (sometimes smaller) groups at 47 yards.

CCC Blazer and CCI Mini Mags are the 2 kinds of ammo it likes

I have a 6 inch 617 no dash equipped with a Sightmark Reflex. At 100 feet, shooting from a sandbag rest with the barrel rested on the sandbag, I can consistently get a 24 round aggragate group just under 2 inches using the cheap Winchester Xpert HV from Walmart. BTW, the groups are a bit oval, measuring just under 2 inches high and 1.5 inches wide, so it's likely there is a bit of ammo variation at work. I'd like to try it with target specific ammo but that seems to be missing in my area, all I can find is the Winchester, the Federal bulk packs, or CCI Stingers. I've picked up a couple boxes of the Federal but haven't tried it yet, mine seems to do pretty well with the Winchester and it was cheap before the price got hiked. Also note, I'm cheap when it comes to targets, I use shoot-n-c's so this old fart can see the hits, which is why I wait until I've shot 4 full cylinders before changing them out. However, I also think that aggregate groups give a better indicator of the performace of the gun as the barrel warms up.

Notes on specifics of my 617. The B/C gap is 0.008 inch, a bit larger than I would like but the gun has proven to be accurate. In addition the strike trail on the forcing cone seems to be perfectly centered after a range session of mixed DA and SA shooting and I have seen no issues with leading in the barrel or the forcing cone. I'll also not that on visual inspection under magnification the barrel crown is perfect. I should also note that the SA trigger breaks a bit under 2 lbs., which is a bit lighter than I am totally comfortable with. Prior to my next trip to the range I plan on replacing the 12 lbs. rebound spring with a 14 lbs. spring to stiffen up the SA break just a bit. As it is now, the SA trigger is light enough that I won't ever let a newbie use the gun in single action.
