Default Model 586 Box Label Question

I don't have the revolver that came in this box (pictured below) and was curious about some of the numbers/letters on the label, and was hoping someone could tell me what they mean.
Some of them are pretty obvious, but what does the following mean?

483 - ???

Stock - What does SB mean? (Square Butt?)
SB

Features - What would the special features be?
Special

Product Code - Possibly that it is a Blue 6" and what else?
103504

Spec. Ord. - ????
5960

Your help is appreciated.

Hi range rider13,

The info below is from SCSW-3.

483 - ??? I don't know what this is.

Stock - What does SB mean? (Square Butt?) Yes
SB

Features - What would the special features be?
Special
See additional info below

Product Code - Possibly that it is a Blue 6" and what else?

103504
6", Blue, Massachusetts State Police Commemorative, 1986

Spec. Ord. - ????

5960
Probably has something to do with Product Code above and the additional info below.

Additional info: Acid etched badge, serial number range MSP0001-MSP0631, 120th commemorative year, 631 manufactured in 1986, Product Code 103504.

However, the s/n on your box appears to be a "regular" s/n. I don't know what this means - maybe a production overrun without the badge or special markings?

Perhaps someone else has more knowledge.

Lorin,
Thanks for the reply. Would you have any idea what the codes would be for a normal model 586 with a 6" barrel (like the one pictured below), regular trigger and hammer (not target and smooth trigger), regular sights (S&W micrometer click sight with plain blade, no white outline), red ramp on front (Baughman?), square butt with the usual wooden grips (checkered Goncalo Alves Target with speed loader cutaway). Serial #AEL64XX which I believe would have been made mid-1984? Since it does have a red ramp (Baughman?) front sight I would have thought it would have had a white outline rear (maybe not original).
Thanks again!

Default Here's my best guess-----

range rider13,

I'll try to answer your questions about what the box codes would be for your M586.

Your gun should be a 586 no-dash shipped in 1984. If it had the firing pin bushing replacement modification, there would be a "M" stamped near the model number.

The codes should be the same as on the box you have -- except:
  • I don't know about that "483" number.
  • Features" would probably have been "RR" (Red Ramp)
  • "Product Code" should have been 103506
  • "Spec. Ord." would have been a 4 number code. The first number would have been a 4, which is the year packaged/shipped (1984). The next three numbers would have been a number between 001 and 365, and represents the ordinal date of packaging/shipping in 1984. For instance, 001= January 1; 365= December 31.
As far as the white outline rear sight blade, S&W made them both ways. Your plain black sight blade is likely original to the gun.

Hope this gives you a bit more information to work with.

Default Model 586 Box Label Question

Lorin,
Thanks so much. The info you provided me was such a great help. The 586 I have does have an "M" stamped near the model number because I personally sent it back to S&W for the modification.
Take care,
Bill (RR13)
