Heads Up - S&W Model 520
I was on GB this morning and found a shooter grade model 520 that has been slightly worked. Ruined in my opinion. Apparently they put a model 27 3 1/2 inch barrel on it and did a RB conversion. If you search Smith 520 it will come up. I have been looking for a shooter grade as I want to keep my other one NIB, but don't want this one. Was thinking somone on here might be interested. I have no connection to seller or gun - Joe

Yes, I saw that one. An interesting conversion but not artfully done.

Ruined....YES.
Very sad when someone takes a fairly scarce classic gun,and just butchers it like that....

I just looked and the only one I saw there was a 4" model 520 for the NYSP going for $1600+. It looked very good.

They have been going for about the $1K range recently, if you shop carefully.

I can understand the round butt conversion, but what is the point of the barrel swap? Better front sight? Better barrel?
Surely you wouldn't go through that to save a half inch.

Maybe the original barrel got "messed up" somehow. I'd pass!

I recently got one with box, tool, Jinks letter for quite a bit less. That particular gun has been continually re-listed.

Somebody posted one in the classifieds a few months back that had been heavily modified. He had paid a famous gunsmith (Hamilton Bowen? I forget) to convert it to .45 Colt with a 5" barrel, keeping the fixed sights of course. What a great idea! It looked just like a Heavy Duty.
I would have loved to buy it, not for collector value, but just as a really unique shooter, but alas, the seller wanted to recoup pretty much his entire investment (over two grand). I can't blame him, but that is an awful lot to spend on any gun, let alone one with such limited collector interest.

Amazing. Someone paid over $700 for this cobbed-up piece of manure. That's more than I paid 2 years ago for mine in original condition with the box, stocks, etc.
