Default Anyone else have a 500ES?

Just traded into a 500ES with the "Survival Kit". Would like to hear from others who might have this package and whether they acutally have fired the gun (ouch!). Also, was this set-up a limited run and if so what year? Thank you in advance for any info offered. Art G. [email protected]

Make sure the bottle of A-1 steak sauce is in the kit. 9 out of 10 brown bears prefer their people with A-1. Black bears aren't so particular.

I'll bet there are closets with .500 ES kits stashed away in them. S&W couldn't make them fast enough - now, nothing! Go figure.

One day I'll get a 4" or 5" .500 - no comp - for 440+ gr @ 800 fps. I think the 'snubby' is too short, but that's me.

Stainz

PS As the years pass - and the CTS, etc, worsens... I find myself having more fun with .22LR's and .38's. Still - a 'little' .500...

I doubt I will ever shoot this one unless I can find a much less than full power factory load. The whole "Emergency Survival" kit concept is just different enough for me to want it as a sort of collectible. If someone else actually has one of these I would like to know what the white object in the front right corner of the box in the "stock" photo posted here is as my kit did not include and it is not listed on the equipment list spec sheet. i have the 460 mag.snubby...my brother has the 500 kit like yours...shoot and enjoy...they are fun!they make a reduced power 500 round or better yet...reload your own....shooting 460 or 500 rounds can sure get expensive if you don't reload them...these kits were still available just a couple years ago...they were also available without the kit for way less money

Default Question...

kennyb: Would you or your brother know what the white object in the front right corner of the box in the "stock photo" posted here is? My kit has the cut-out in the foam for something to go there but whatever it is was not in my kit and nothing to identify what it might be is listed on the equipment spec sheet. Thank you!

That "bear kit" tell me that was a damn joke! I mean all you need is a holster and a can of bear spray, what's all that other ****?

It is an interesting set up and I had to have one. Did shoot five or six times with both the reduced power and a full load. The reduced power to me was like a supercharged 44 magnum and the full power was relentless. Now I must say I basically shoot 22,but the bigger calibers aren't for me. I believe what you are referring to is some type of fire starter, according to one of my nature loving friends.

Maybe it's a whistle - or a bell - the two most common items found in grizzly scat!

You might well need emergency services if you shoot that brute with a full 500.

if you took a moment to review whats there it's pretty obvious what the "****" as you say is....it's designed as a survival kit for bush pilots,4-wheelers,etc.i'm not sure how or where you reached the conclusion that it was a "bear kit"these kits have also been released in 460/44 mag./9mm,etc.

I was going by the picture of that nasty lookin' bear they have in the box, kinda ridiculous that, but if it's a survival kit that's not bad.....unless they jack the price up $100 or more over what the gun is actually worth (like they do with "Lady" Smiths)

I have one of these. In fact I have five different 500's. The two little white looking pellets were fire starters or actually used as a fire starter aid. I remember the first time I saw one of these in the store. There was some young man explaining to his friend "These must be ear plugs because it's so loud" as he proceeded to shove one in his ear.
At any rate I have shot mine several times and have even put 5 of Ranger Ricks 700gr slugs through it. It's not something I'd recommend to anyone though. The gun is designed for just what the name implies, Emergency Survival. Unless you have a fondness for beating up your hands it's best reserved for that. Surprisingly though it's a lot more accurate than I thought it would be too.

I purchased the ES Kit a couple months ago and have shot 60 rounds ranging from HSM's 350 gr JHP to Corbon's 500 gr Hunter HC. Got to say I love to shoot this gun! It took about 20 rounds to find the right grip and get over the initial shock and awe. With practice, I've been able to improve accuracy quite a bit.

My primary reason for purchasing the ES 500 Magnum was to carry it while hiking in bear country which we do several times a week.

It's not for everyone but as with any firearm, you can learn to shoot this gun with accuracy within a reasonable distance. Yep, after shooting a few rounds you know it ain't a .22, but I'm sore after working out at the gym too.

I paid about $1000, with tax from the local gun shop, it had been in stock for about 3 years.

This an old post 2 + years but if you look at the price of these now it and the 460 ES have doubled in price during this period. Not many Smith revolvers have seem that kind of jump. No point just interesting observation.

I've been looking around for a 460ES; a member here has been kind enough to point me to a couple he has seen for sale. The price is a bit steep and after watching a couple youtubes of guys firing it, I think I may want to give my right wrist an early Valentines Day gift and NOT get one. But I must admit, big bore revolvers call out to me every time I see one. My latest acquisition is a 460V.

I have been looking for a 500es with the kit for a while now. If any one has one for sale or can point me in the right direction I would be grateful.

I think the whole kit gimmic is neat.

I look at this and I can see the appeal for those that want the "biggest and baddest", but I don't think it's for me.

I enjoy shooting a 4" .44 Magnum, but that's about the upper limit of my endurance now (and it stretches it after awhile). Long gone are the 100+ yard handrifle days.

Looking at the specs a 4" Model 29 is about the same OAL (longer barrel but shorter frame/cyl), and considerably lighter.

I just hope all my local bears have seen "Dirty Harry" . . .

I have owned both the .500 ES and the /460 ES for about three years now. I shoot each one about twice a month. It take took me a about three months to get used to the .500. When I first started, I could only do about five rounds... I gradually got the hang of it... experimenting with different grips and worked my way up to where I shoot 50-80 rounds each session.

About half the time with my .500, I shoot relatively mild 300 grain bullets @ about 1400 ft lb. The rest of my time is split with the hotter 350 and 440 grains loaded at about 2200 ft lb.

They have become a lot of fun to shoot and are quite accrurate... but it is a long learning curve. The penetration with the 2 3/4" barrel is incredible when shooting 440 grain hardcast bullets and moderate speed.

I carry one or the other around when fishing in Alaska, which I do about three times a year. These two guns are very different... the .460 is a little heavier and seems to have a longer, but lower velocity recoil.

I have a .44 mag and a Rugar .45 LC that I shoot with +p rounds.

I find both the .460 ES and the .500 ES much easier and more comfortable to shoot.

I haven't looked around... I was unaware that the price for these guns have gone up.

I was at a LGS today and they had one of these kits for sale today with the .500. Unfortunately, the price was $1,700. Ouch, even before you pull the trigger.

Default Anyone else have a 500ES?

I had one. Shot it 10 times and traded it away. Not that bad on the recoil considering the barrel length but at $3.50 a round here in SC, I let it go. Oh we'll, it was fun while it lasted.

Default 500ES - Emergency Survival Kit

This newly found addition to the clan compliments my 460 Carry's 3-1/2" bbl. nicely

Has anybody seen the production numbers for these?

Cataloged only in 2007 & 2008?

It's a brutal gun I was lucky to buy some 500 special several years ago. I bought 500 special rounds when I first bought the ES. You can also shoot the 275 grain and that has less of a kick in the bigger ones. I did sell the ES a few years ago because it wasn't fun to shoot even with the special rounds.

Got to the range today to try my 500ES. Loaded up two different bullets, Hornady 300gr FTX & 350gr XTP, with three different powders & they all hit way low. The best I got was 3" low with the rear sight adjusted up.

My front sight is .300" tall & the rear blade is .128" tall. I think I'll temporarily put a rear sight with a .160" blade on it to see if I can get it zero'd.

Anybody else have this issue?

These NIB kits are up to around $2,500 these days.

Epic collection piece.

Wanted a kit, but never got around to it. Picked the 500 with black grips, it is fun to shoot, less recoil that the 8 3/8. I like the 350 hornady XTP, tried some 400 & 440 which were OK. I have not tried the 500-700 gr rds in it, but I doubt they will be stable much past 25-35 yds. Any one try the heavy loads? Be Safe,

I hadn't noticed that the 44Mag was a 3" bbl. before.

They show the 460 & 500 as being the same weight, which seems doubtful given the 500's larger bores/chambers. My 500ES weighs 52.5oz on my digital scale.

Here's the related ESK page from the 2007 S&W catalog.

Update : I put a .160" bladed rear sight on the 500ES & that helped but I still needed a bit more elevation and ended up going with a SDM .250" red fiber optic sight (P250R) on the front. With the rear sight about 2/3 the way up it now hits to POA with 350gr & 400gr bullets loaded to about 85% of max. powder loads at 15yds.

I have seriously considered putting night sights ( millet) the same as I have on the 4" 629, & 57 on the 500ES. Considering that I do spend a fair amount of time in bear/cougar/wolf country in the evening and at night they would look nice. That said I walk out of the woods with out a light, since most of the 4 legged creatures will go out of their way to avoid me, skunks scare me!!!! If the trio above attacked with malice, in the dark, I doubt I would have time to soil myself, let alone draw!! But the Millets do give a nice sight picture in daylight or dusk for hunting. Be Safe,
