Welcome to the forum!

S&W did indeed make some of their guns with factory relieved slots in the barrel for scope mounting. Somewhere on this forum about 5-8 months ago another member posted an ad that used to run in the various gun rags showing the guns that came this way. I still have quite a few of those mag ads here, but have no way to scan them and post them right now. IIRC those guns used a special ring set that was made just for those particular models, so you may have a hard time finding a set. The guns also came with factory SB combats as standard equipment. I believe that they only came in 8 3/8" barrel length too. Blued or SS.

Smile 8 3/8 29

This one is a 29-3 - like new - and beautiful. The rings I am told may be available through Millett - Originals are like hens teeth. The gun shoots so well I can leave my 44 Winchester 94 at home most times - thought you may enjoy - you have one that was only made 3-4 years I think. Enjoy - jb

Usually, yes a little bit, since they are much harder to come by, but it usually requires that evrything be original and all there, including the factory mounts.
