Default 586-7 or 686-7?

I saw a 586-7 recently and I must have one! Unfortunately, I can't find any available that hasn't been shot to death or they like it too well to give a decent price.

However, I did see a 686-7 and love the grips. It's a Talo model, NIB for $750. Is this a fair price?

It might be hard to find the 586-7, 7 shot, they were a special run of 2000 4" and 2000 6".They were made for the Sports Authority group. When they were closing out all of their handguns they were selling them for $412. I bought one and sent several of my friends to get them.Nice revolver.

The 686+ is a very nice 3" barrel revolver. The pricing at $750 looks a little high to me. I've seen them on the auction sites in the range of $650-700. Of course you then pay shipping and transfer fees. If you want a 3" L frame this is one of the nicer looking ones.

The 586 in the picture you posted is a Performance Center 586 L-Comp, 7 shot, 3" compensated barrel. Not too many around and usually expensive, especially new theough you can find some decent deals on used ones from time to time (Bud's has one right now - used S&W 586 L Comp Performance Center $859.00 SHIPS FREE). I bought mine from another forum member last year and have been very pleased with it. Great shooting gun, well balanced, very smooth, and incredibly accurate.

I saw that Bud's had a 3" 686 for less than the first price I saw one for....under $700. I didn't know the pic I posted of the 586 was ported. I'm not sure I'd want that feature. I can imagine in low light or worse it would look like a mad bull snorting-fire blasting out each side. I think I'd rather have one without the porting.

I did find another photo of another one but can't tell if it's ported or not due to the angle of the photo. Are all of them Comp pistols or is this just with the Performance group? Bud's $859 seems a bit steep for a used gun but, I don't know what they originally cost. I thought it strange they mentioned in the write up that it included three moon clips?

This is the other photo I mentioned of another 586-7.

The second pic you posted is also a PC 586 L-Comp. The cylinders of these guns are machined for moonclips from the factory and include 5 or 6 when new.
These guns sell in the $1000-$1200 range new, so used ones sell for what the market will bear.

Did S&W make any that were not ported? That's the one thing I'm not especially wild about but this is such a good size and a fine looking one to boot. I don't have a clue what it may have been called or I'd Google it to see.

That is a good question. The L-Comp was made with a ported barrel. It came in several variations. My current L-Comps are all six-shooters but my first one was a seven-shooter. My only complaint is that it is hard to properly clean the compensator. Someone here may have a trick to make it easier. They are very enjoyable to shoot because the comp does work with hot loads. In fact, it works best with hot loads. I can't tell that they are any more accurate than a bone stock L-frame but it does say "Performance Center" on the frame.

I just bought the same SW model 686 w/3 inch barrel with the nice looking wooden grip. I've put 200 rounds thru it to date. It is an excellent handgun. I would highly recommend it. I also have a 4 inch version. I am relatively new to the handgun world. You will like the 686 w/3inch barrel. Enjoy. I paid $ 775.

I noticed both of yours are the keyless variety. that was a bad move IMO, on S&W's part. No one I know of likes them at all.

I wouldn't mind the Comp but I can't help thinking what a noise it would make indoors and all the bright flash from the ports. That's my one big beef with Comp guns. Even the ones Magnaported years ago didn't catch my eye.

From my experience with comp guns, they are loud but the flash actually helps illuminate the sight after the first shot.

Default 586-7

I picked up mine at Guns Auction. Keep an eye on the site, but careful not to bid too high.

We just sold a really nice 586, 4" barrel for $450.00.

It only lasted two days for that price. It had the hogue and original cocobolo wood grips with it. Both grips were immaculate as well.

I would prefer a 686 with a six inch barrel.

As a matter of fact I have an LE holster for a 6" still.
