Default Question For Ruger GP-100 Users

While cleaning after my most recent range visit I noticed the crane latch pivot had worked its way out of the latch. It was easy enough to screw back in, but I wondered if it was something to be concerned about so I called a local gunsmith and emailed Ruger. The gunsmith said not to be concerned - it was normal that this part works its way out over time (the gun is about 18 months old and has 1200 rounds through it), but Ruger emailed me back suggesting I send the gun in for evaluation. Any thoughts?

I'd let Ruger tune up the revolver since they offered, just because. Are they paying for shipping?
As to loose screws, I usually just put on the locktite and forget about it unless it comes out again.

No, they didn't offer to pay for shipping. Shipping back and forth would cost more than a tune up by a local gunsmith.

Guess I'm lucky, cuz if anything happens to my Ruger revolvers I can merely drop them off at the factory...right here in NH! :-)

Put a dab of loctite on the threads and tighten it up; it's a screw!

I would double check to see if they would pay shipping both ways.

I have seen a few with loose crane latch pivot pins. A little dab of Loctite like tslepebull said will do ya.

They won't offer...unless you ask.
Ask them for a call tag. The call taker will probably agree.
I say this from personal experience with Ruger.

On my GP100, the crane latch pivot does not look like a screw. It appears to be a pin that is an interference fit. The head is rounded and has no slots for a screw driver.

What are we discussing here, the cylinder release?

Mine looks like a threaded pin. There is a very small slot on the head. I had to put on my reading glasses to see it. If this is just something to occasionally check I won't bother sending it back to Ruger. Every time I shoot my 329NG I have to tighten the latch screw and also the screws attaching the rear sight to the frame.

Yes. It's the threaded pin that screws into the bottom of the cylinder release latch.

Gotcha! Thanks. The one on my gun seems tight. I'll double check it with a tiny screwdriver. I think the one that screws into the corkscrew on some Swiss Army knives may fit.

How many rounds are through your gun? I never noticed mine until 1200 rounds by which time it had worked itself out enought that a significant portion of the pin was protruding.

Mine as well. Rounded head. No slots for a screw driver.

OH, I see it now. You were talking about the crane latch. I was looking in front of the cylinder.
Mine seems tight. I have never needed to mess with it. Blue Loctite may be the best answer.

It's normal for it to come loose. Loctite is fine- just make sure it's the kind that'll break loose. Otherwise, clear nail polish works ok, too... Just steal some from your G/F, wife, or sister lol.

Maybe 300-400. I'll keep an eye on it.
