Convert Model 581 to round butt
Will this markedly damage the salability of the revolver? Round butts just fit my hands better; and, are better for concealed carry.
Searched this forum; but, no information discussed in the archives.
Thanks,
Ric

Why?
You don't see too many 581's floating around....why ruin the potential value of what may be a collector piece?
You can get the 681 in round butt, as well as 65, 13, 686....why not just get one that came that way?
It's your gun, and you can do what you like, but you may be costing yourself money now and later.
Shoot us some pictures....we all like to see pictures
ps...the 581,681 are really sweet shooters...I love my 681.

If it is done professionally, it probably would not decrease its value substantially, but it would remove it from collectible status. Also, one would have to be careful not to remove part of the serial number in the process. As SAFireman noted, there are many similar factory RB guns available.

Uh huh. They are a rare breed and can collect top dollar from the right buyer (me).

Are 581s in general fairly rare, or is it a particular barrel lenth of dash?

581's aren't very common, I saw two and gobbled both of them up! I don't see the point in round butting a 4" full underlug barrel .357.....you can get a much more common 4" Model 10 already in round butt or have that one round butted.
It will hurt saleability, no one wants "someone else's custom gun" and 581's and 681's are getting to be collectible. You would be taking possibly a $500 collectible service revolver and turning it into a $300 shooter grade gun.
It would be more cost effective to just buy a brand new 64-8, and put some wood grips on it.

I was wondering. I found a 581 no dash in 98% several months ago for $425 and snapped it up. I love it. I did replace the orginal stacks with Herrets, and put the orginals away. It shoots much better than I do.

If you intend to keep this revolver, then do what you want (providing it doesn't alter the SN), it's your gun.
If you practice the "catch and release" program, then no, leave it alone.
I have roundbutted a number of revovers-1917s, a M24-3, several M19s, a M25-5, several M15s, etc. The RB fits my smallish hand much better.

Here is a link to a forum member that had quite a lot of custom work done to his 581 including converting it to round butt:
A very special 581 Custom

Here's one of my 581's with standard PC Magna's, shown with it's Ruger "counterpart" a 4" fixed sight GP100. The grip already feels pretty small on the 581 and I used this gun for CC a time or two and the PC grips don't print at all.
I never got excited about the "custom" stuff, the gun in that link looks pretty, but if I saw it used I wouldn't pay a premium for it. Some people like to "personalize" their guns, which is fine but I never got into it. I prefer a stock, holster worn duty gun. The most "custom" it gets for me is if the guy who owned it before me had a tune job done on it, then it's just a bonus.

GREAT ADVICE!!!
Learned two, possibly three things:
1) 581 (no dash) is rare,
2) If I interpret Harrison correctly, Herrett's makes stocks for this weapon that resemble a round butt conversion.
3) 681's available in round butt configuration; I have a 681 (no dash) but as you know, it has a square butt.
Thanks!!!
