Okay, I mentioned im my range report on the Colt Model of 1917 New Service, that I was ordering the new Smith version of their 1917.
Well, here it is with an original for comparison. The main visual differences are the straight end on the extractor rod, the "modern" shape of the hammer and the internal firing pin which is only visible when the revolver is cocked.
I chose the nickel finish rather than the blue as I intend to carry this revolver in my armpit and nickel will resist rusting better and I figure fewer people will buy nickel so if they ever become "collectible", the nickel will probably be the rarest.
One nice thing is the wide front sight! It is about twice as wide as the vintage sight and is much easier to see. Since taking this photo, the front sight has been painted dayglo red.
I shot the revolver a bit, but it really needs a trigger job. I will make a detailed shooting report when I get it back from Nelson Ford, where it is going this week.
I had one other problem also which involves extraction of brass. There is a hang up during this process that I feel is probably due to the inside of the chambers needing more polishing.
What shooting I did do with it shows that the revolver shoots to point of aim out to at least 15 yards with both ball and Ranger T hollow points; my .45ACP carry load. So that part is good, anyway.
...more to come....
