Default 629 Stealth Hunter vs Hunter plus, etc etc? What are the diffs?

It is a sad day... I was so close to pulling the trigger on this one -

Smith & Wesson PC Stealth Hunter 44 Magnum : Revolvers at GunBroker.com

and after 5 days with no bids I said to myself - Self, wait until the auction expires and offer $1,200.

That didn't work out.

So, I sit here crying in my beer and looking at the other S&W 44 mags designed for hunting.

I want a S&W 44 mag with a rail on top, primary uses being 50% range fun and 50% deer/hogs.

I really love the look of the two tone Stealth Hunter. Anyone know how many were made or of any others floating around out there?

Failing that, are there any mechanical differences between the two tone and solid black Stealth Hunters (pre-lock - post lock isn't a consideration).

What about the 629PC stainless "Hunter PLUS" - is it as good/strong?

Of the other 6.5- 8 3/8th 44s, anything else without a lock that would be worth looking at? I want a rail on top, I plan to mount an Aimpoint.

I'd really prefer not to get one with a lock.

Anyone know what the difference between the stealth hunter and "Hunter PLUS" is?

I have both the stealth Hunter 629-5 two-tone no lock, and the Hunter plus 629-4. The Hunter plus I have has a 7 1/2 inch Bbl thats more tappered designed where the Stealth Hunter has the heavy 7 1/2 inch bbl. Both have are very accurate but my go to whitetail gun is the stealth hunter...its designed for business

I just bought a Performance Center 629-5 Hunter Plus with porting and rail on top. I planned on scoping it, but after shooting it, I am getting 2'' groups at 50 yards with the open sights. I think that will do for the type of close range deer hunting that I want to do.

When you said deer/hogs you got my attention. My hog gun is a 629-3 (8 and 3/8 inch barrel) that came out of the box with target trigger and hammer and ready for scope mounting. I put a 30mm Ultradot with a 3 MOA dot on top. Many years of use and I have zero complaints, zero thoughts about it needing something else done to it, and it's my favorite S&W revolver.

Well, having failed to get the Stealth Hunter two tone, I bought a 629-4 7.5" Hunter Plus this morning.

Other than the barrel taper and OD Green/Black color scheme, are there any other mechanical differences?

And, for the record, if anyone sees a 629 Stealth Hunter with the two tone Birdsong, I'm still interested.

Default stealth hunter is junk

Ive tried to have my stealth hunter repaired sent it back to receive it still not repaired.Told them to test fire it. Barrel alignmet was out and under tightened, Cone and cylinder not in spec. Put a scope on it and the port exaust fogs my scope. Performance center? HA HA HA LOL!!!!! It will put a 2 of six in a 6" at 25yds.I was hoped to deer hunt to a 100 yds. not with this gun.JUNK will sell it and go with a Ruger super red hawk.
S&W really dosent care till people stop buying. I would check out the Ruger and read reviews. With the 629 many people have the same problems

Default Here's another one to look for...

I've got this one, and it will shoot darn near anything well.
629-4 from the Performance Center.

Default 44 mag hunter pc

It came with a cheap red dot shot 40 rounds and the glass cracked. I went on line to see what it cost to buy and the price is $29.oo Its hard to believe they would include a junk red dot with a $1300 gun. I need a red dot because my sight is not what it was when I was younger. any suggestions?

bluethunder, if S&W supplied the red dot sight I would contact them for warranty replacement. If you don't want a replacement from them maybe they could send check for the value of the dot sight they supplied.

Pangris,

If I was in the market to purchase a super nice pre-lock 629 I would recommend the 629 Hunter which 2 hawk posted a picture of or this one that a board member listed for sale on gun broker- S&W Performance Center 629-5 (No Lock) Comp Hunter : Revolvers at GunBroker.com

Bill is a great guy to deal with as well and is close to your location I think as well.

Eric

Default How many Performance Center .44 Magnum Stealth Hunters two tone were ever made???

I own a Performance Center .44 Magnum Stealth Hunter model 629-6, FXP0007 with the two tone black with birdsong NATO green.

I contacted Smith & Wesson and inquired as to how many of these units were ever manufactured. This was they're reply...

Hi Louie, thanks for contacting S&W today and your interest in our product. It looks like our part number for that revolver is: 170230 and we produced "453" of them.

Your serial number FXP0007 left the factory on: 12/16/2002. I am not aware of any significance to the FXP prefix.

Thank You! SWCS

Hope this info helps...
