scope mount holes dont match up with holes on topstrap for 629-2
hey fellas, i have a 629-2 unfluted cylinder 8 3/8". just picked up an N-Frame mount and went to screw it in and the holes wont line up. do the 629-2s normally come with the 3 holes in the topstrap from the factory? or is this an aftermarket job?( i bought my beast 2nd hand)-perhaps someone messed up the milling, threw the rear sight back on it and sold it to my dumb *** at a show? or do i need to buy a mount specifically for this model...i have one screw holding it on but probly not a good idea on a .44mag. pardon my ignorance as ive never mounted a scope on anything before- pistol or rifle. perhaps someone has the dimensions for the spacing of the holes(edge to edge) i can check with calipers...i did buy the mount second hand too so this could be an issue.

I suspect that what you have is a "homebrew" mounting scheme. Your 629-2 dates to 1988-89 and this predates the standard 3 hole mounting pattern that was introduced in 1993. I also susspect that your frame wasn't tapped using the #6-48 thread, it's in the Extra Fine series and not at all common. At this point your best option is probably to have a machinist measure where your holes are on your gun and machine a rail to fit. You will also want to determine what tap was used on your frame so you can purchase the correct screws.
BTW, just for reference, here is the Standard mounting pattern used since 1993. BTW, these dimension were determined by measuring my 610 using gage pins and a height gage and confirmed by eyeballing my model 620 using digital calipers. So, they are are the same between the L and N frames and I would expect the X and K frames use the same pattern. As for the measurements, they are spot on for being workable but may deviate by as much as 0.010 inch from what S&W's blueprints for these guns may list. All dimensions are from the vertical face of the notch cut into the top strap that the adjustable sight nests into.
The dimension for the front hole is 1.775 inch from that face to center. The dimension for the middle hole is 1.175 inch from that face to center. The dimension for the rear hole is 0.510 inch from that face to center.

I'm in the same boat with my 6" Model 28-2, I wanted to restore it to it's former status as a "vintage deer revolver" with a 70's era 1.5x Redfield.
The last owner had two holes drilled and tapped and they seem to fit some mount that no longer exists. There are wear marks from the rail, so obviously SOMEthing was on it! I sure wish it had been included in the sale, so I don't have to track down some obscure mount. Like above, he just threw the sight assembly back on to hide the holes so the gun shop wouldn't see it, and so a buyer (my dumb ***) would buy it! For $380 I ain't complaining, worse case scenario I'll throw the rear sight back on and forget about it!

scooter you are correct. definately a botch job..here are my dimensions, roughly eyeballed from notch face to center...front hole 1.655, middle hole 1.125 and rear hole .560. thank you very much for the help. i will just flip the mount around and machine the other side with the correct( i use the term correct loosely) dimensions. i work at a small mom and pop metal shop that is pretty right wing gun-friendly and see if i can get one of the guys to throw it on the mill real quick.
