i recently purchased a 357 stamped nysp below cylinder. inside it is stamped mod 681 with a seperate small m. it is also stainless steel or nickel. anybody familiar with this? im a beginner collector and was told this was some sort of distinguished service revolver. what would the value of this handgun be?
It's not nickel, SS with a nice polish job I suspect. The "M" indicates that the recall was done (581,681, 586, 686 etc revolvers) - sent you a PM as well. It was the issue sidearm from '81 - '90 for uniform Troopers.
The 681 was the last service revolver issued to troopers by the New York State Police before they went to Glocks. S&W named it the
distinguished Service Magnum. Not sure of the value, but there are some retired troopers always looking to pick one up. I have a NYSP marked Model 28-2 which was the issue gun prior to the 681. Nice find.
