Default The 627-0 and 627-1,3lbs. of 357 Magnum stainless.

At 50 OUNCES each these are the heaviest production N frame 357 Magnum revolvers ever.

The 627-0 was produced in 1989. It was the only stainless Smith
ever to have a checkered topstrap.
Unfluted, round butt, flash chromed hammer and trigger.
It is a magnum shooters dream.

The 627-1 came along 4 years later in 1993. Looking very similar
The differences show in the extractor star and the acid etched
caliber designation on the right side of the barrel.
"357 Magnum model 627" on the sideplate from the factory.
Case color trigger and target hammer.
The rear sight assembly is the '-4' rounded front type ,and the
topstrap is drilled and tapped for a scope mount from the factory.

Here are some photographs showing the differences and similarities.

The early extractor star. 1989.

The later extractor. This eliminated the need for the two tiny
locating pins to be installed in the cylinder face.
Thus eliminating a production step.

The last 4 digits of the serial # are stamped in the ejector rod cut
out in the barrel ,and on the cylinder under the extractor.
I've never seen this on a modern Smith before.

Regards ,
AlleN-Frame

Beautiful guns. Photos like that make me think to myself, "What the hell was I doing in 1989 that caused me to not buy one of those?"

Not quite. Freedom Arms model 83's in 357 range from 52 to 62 ozs. depending on barrel length.

Hi Jim, nice to see you posting here again! Don't forget the Redhawks with 7.5" bbls. They were around 56-58 oz.

Those are beautiful guns Allen, and I know you're a proud papa. Thanks for sharing.

Allen, I hope (for your wallet's sake) that you are not going to corner the local market on 627s like you have done on 3" 66s. I was luck to get ONE 3" 66 and ONE 627-0. You deserve to have a great S&W collection with all of the work that you have done on line and at gun shows. I look forward to shooting your new acquisitions.

Allenframe;

Those are great pictures of excelent condition hard to find 627s.

The barrel and sideplate markings on same dash number 6 shot 627s vary. Some sideplates have words that refer to target shooting, the phrasing varies, and not all of the phrases are in the SCSW. SCSW has a picture of several 627s including a flutted full lug 6 shot. I'm curious if that fluted revolver was incorrectly identified. I like the flutes but I doubt that configuration exists. What do you think?

You wrote "At 50 OUNCES each these are the heaviest production N frame 357 Magnum revolvers ever". To call you wrong a few picky repliers had to leave out "N frame".

Best Regards;

Gil

Well Gil, that's because he went back and edited the original post to add "N frame" after we brought up the weight thing...

Guilty as charged. post was edited to add N frame to the text.
No one was bein'picky ,just weight correct.

My good friend and shooting buddy has an 8 3/8ths 686 ,and I
would swear that the 627 is heavier.
I'm sure it is just a matter of how they FEEL and the way the weight is distributed.

Regards , Allen Frame

my 627-0 is a shooter..I've put quite a few rounds thru it..very smooth and extremely accurate..mine has Hogue grips that I put on..I bought it used back in '92 for a paltry sum of $350...it had Pachmayr grips, no box...

I had problems with the star extractor in that it would turn..sent it into S&W and they replaced the cylinder/extractor with the newer type thats on the -1's..to be honest I like the "beef" of the -1 extractor better...they also took the time to keep close tolerance of cylinder to forcing cone..

the cost was..nothing...and the gun shoots just as well as ever..I love my 627-0

I like the new style front sight the -1 incorporates. I have a -0 and bought one for each of my two sons, but have never laid eyes on a -1. In fact, I think this is the first photos I have seen either. Does anyone know the dash number of the 5 inch 627's with fluted cylinder made in the early 90s?

The front sight on the -0 and the -1 engineering revisions is the same.

Did you mean to say the rear sight?

My -1 has been pictured on this forum many times in these 627 threads.

The -1 engineering revision is drilled and tapped for scopes. That caused the rear sights forward screw to be relocated. At this point S&W also began rounding off the front of the spring leaf giving the sight a much better appearance.

Of the four engineering revisions that product code 101024 was produced under, the -1 would be my first choice for a shooter. The -2 is the one that is hardest to find even though the no dash gets all the oohs and aahs for being rare.

Colt saa: I did mean the rear sight! I guess I just didn't look closely enough and assumed your -1 was a -0. I am pretty sure I did not realize yours was a -1 as i have been curious about them, having had -0's and two -2's that are 6 shot, 6 inch guns, and wondering what was in between. I started out over 10 years ago looking for a six shot, fluted cylinder 5" 627 that I knew they made, and now have a bunch of 627s but not the one that started my search.

What's the going rate for a 627-0 Model of 1989, 5 1/2 inch, with combats, no box or paperwork, high 90% ?

I just commented yesterday on another post about what I thought of my 627-0. I knew it was heavy, but that never bothered me. I think I would have to be starving and homeless before I would let her go. Even my wife likes to shoot it.

I miss the standard barrel profile on the 627's.

Rarely seen for sale in my neck of the woods but I wouldn't think twice pulling the trigger for $1100 or less. W/O the combats say $1000.

NIB: $1200 or less would work for me given location.

There is one now on GB for $1800 but that is being sold by a familiar dealer known for stretching the price limits.

Anyone know how much an 8-shot 627-2 goes for?

Nice.

My LGS during the n frame sale he had two 4" barreled revolvers with the full under lug one was a 44mg and the other was a 45lc. In stainless the barrels could of been longer they were hidden in the case. Went back to look again they were gone. I think the label said Hunter on it.
