I own one such example, with 6.5" barrel. I recently read on another forum that a number of these revolvers left the factory with questionable cylinder metallurgy. This poster further stated that if such a revolver were returned to the factory for any service or repair, S&W was unable to replace the faulty cylinders--would not return the revolver to the customer--and would only provide a factory credit toward purchase of a current S&W firearm.

My 624 shoots WONDERFULLY. It has no issues, and runs "Skeeter's Load" (Lyman #429421 and 7.5 grains of Unique) very well. I was pretty pretty deeply involved in the firearms hobby and business before these examples were sold, and remain so to this day. I sold A LOT of S&W products as a Type 01 FFL for 12 years (1981-1993), and never heard a whisper of this information during or since that time--until now.

1) Is this Internet BS, or is it based in factual information?

2) If true, is there a serial number range available to identify the affected examples?

There is some basis for the recall. Suggest you do a search on 624 Recall here. Topic has been discussed before, lots of good info.
I've had 3 624's and all are fine. Word of advice, when I called S&W the rep I spoke w/initially knew nothing about the recall. Did end up talking to someone who was able to clear the gun I was calling about.

I have two 624's that were subject to the recall. However, I still have the original boxes. If the questionable revolvers were checked and found OK, then the boxes have a Red "C" on the box.

I have two 624's and one 629 that falls within the number range of questionable revolvers. I called Smith and the first gentleman that I talked with had never heard of it (it was WAY before his time). However, he put me in touch with a lady who was well aware of the problem. My 629 has to go back (at Smith's expense) to be checked.

Defective material is something I do NOT want in a revolver of mine. There is the distinct possibility that it'll work perfectly well up to the time it doesn't. The you get a Kaboom!

I have great affection for my 624's and would hate to lose them. However, if they have to go it's better than my body parts, that's for sure. I am sure that Smith will do right by you. I could live with a Mountain Gun for replacement, as a for instance. I would rather have what I have but...

This post from 2012 pretty well covers the issue. Consensus is that the only issue is that some 624 cylinders will accept 44 mag rounds. I didn't know this 20 years or so ago when I sent in two 624s in the suspect SN range and both came back as "ok" but only marked on the box, not the gun.

44 Special first came out (1908) before heat treating became widespread in revolver manufacture. It seems to me most 44 Special cartridges are safe to fire in any 624. Mine falls within the call-back range so I avoid the Keith level loads in it.

I've got a 624 that takes .44 magnum rounds. It is mis-marked as a 629-4 Mountain gun.
