Neighbors 686-4 NIB For Sale.
He's decided to sell the gun, and he's still got the paper box the gun came in and is asking $800 for the gun, but I do not like the K/L frame guns so I thought I would ask here if he's got the gun priced correctly and maybe if someone here were interested in buying the gun I could get them some pictures or contact info.
He sold his 617 that was also pre-lock 6 shooter, but he has a 629-? in 6" barrel I would like to get off him. But as my luck goes that is the gun he likes and wants to keep even though it's NIB or LNIB with just a few rounds fired. He's got a Colt Gold Cup 70 series that he bought new in the '70's and shot a couple boxes with it then lost interest and has not been fired he says in 25 years at least.

A lot of this depends upon your market, where you live. I bought a truly NIB from the store for $590 + tax a couple months ago. $800 would be an absolute joke in my market (central TX).
Of course there are also mail order retailers. Bud's Guns sells them delivered for $675ish + ffl fees.
$800 is high in any market, but I have heard some new 686s getting closer to $800. I wouldn't pay more than $500 for a used 686 and not sure that's a good deal with $590 NIB available here.
One point of information NIB means *new* in box. Most take that to mean straight from the manufaturer via a retailer and never shot since then nor handled much beyond typical show room needs. I don't have a problem calling a private party sale NIB if it hasn't been shot nor handled much. Generically speaking it also may have a great affect on the warranty.

There is no doubt the -4 series is the most desirable, and a 2 1/2" might bring that for a LNIB. But I say he's probably about $100-150 high for most of the country.

I think that is high anyware. It would not get traction here in California. Maybe of it is some odd configuration or lew Horton etc. But that seems at least $150 to high. They made a lot of 686's

Somewhere in the $600 to $700 range would be a dealers price in my area but the same dealer would offer him between $350 and $450 for the gun. I personally wouldn't be afraid of $600 but that would be tops.

I asked him why he has never fired it and he said he just never got around to shooting it and eventually it got put into back of safe and just more or less forgot about it because of buying other guns. Part of the problem is he has worked mid-night to 8 am for 25 years and was sleeping till 3 or 4 in the afternoon during those years.
I guess I can relate some what since I have a couple NIB guns that were bought and not shot because of saving them for the grandsons.
But I agree some what that the asking price is too high, but I would rather pay $800 for it then $800 the new 686 like it cost, at least there is no lock or floating firing pin. I think it has the MIM trigger and hammer but not sure as it's been 3 or 4 years since I have seen the gun.

I seem to remember some late 4's having just MIM trigger & hammer and it's not mentioned in the book, but the 5 had full MIM clock work instead of just hammer an trigger. If I correct those MIM hammer and trigger only guns the MIM parts could be replaced, but starting with the 5 they couldn't because of other changes like frame mounted firing pin.

In TX that would be a 600-650 gun. I agree that most people would rather have the pre-lock 686 but I don't think there would be many takers at 800. I recently bought a LNIB Mod 686 for around $600.
Good luck to your neighbor.

Guys this is a new in the box gun, not a used one. I just got through looking at it and it still shows were S&W fired a round in 3 of the chambers, every other one, and all he did was run a an oil patch to clean the chambers and through the barrel, then wiped off the front of the cylinder. It needs some general cleaning, the side plate has never had a screw off or out of the gun and probably needs a good cleaning inside.
It has a fair amount of patina over the gun and a couple of spots were something rubbed through the patina, but just some turtle wax over the gun and it would shine like a new silver dollar and not have a scratch on it.
The DA is about normal for a Smith, but the DA is better then any of the three 686's I have owned in the past. Like I said it's a better buy IMHO then any new 686 w/o any doubt, and before I would even think of forking $750 or more out for a new one I would give $800 for this one for sure.

The only 686s that I think are worth that kind of money would be the CS (Custom Service) examples. But I still believe that you can never pay to much for a gun, you can only buy it to early. A few years from now $800 may look like a steal.

I am usually never one to say that a Smith is priced too high...but that one is priced too high. If you want to pay it, then it is worth it to you but even form me it is about $200 too high.

Brother I think that is at least 300-400 too high for my neck of the woods also. My buddy bought a 6" dash 4 in the box from the original owner for around $275.00 last fall I think. This was an excellent deal of course and not the norm, but the point is there are better deals to be had. Keep looking but if it is what you want, buy it and enjoy!

Why is it I never see those kind of deals?
Sometimes I must say I get a little suspicious of those that brag of those kind of deals.
I have several guns, Colts & S&W's that I paid too much for at the time but are now or will be in the near future worth more then I paid for an excellent used gun or new gun. The price of gold has moved up and down dramatically over the last 30 years, but guns just go up and never come back down. As someone said this $800 gun may be a little high today but in two years it won't and in ten it will seem cheap.

The 686 in that picture doesn't have a MIM hammer. It has a hammer mounted firing pin, which precludes it being a MIM part.
I can't see the back of the trigger, but based on what I can see (the trigger isn't cheap looking or ugly) I'd wager the trigger isn't MIM either.
The only MIM part I see is the thumb piece.
If they are getting six or seven hundred for current production 686-8's or whatever dash they are up to, a NIB 686-4 is worth more......way more.
How much more is up to you. I already have mine! Good luck with your decision. Regards 18DAI.

That appears to have the case harden trigger and hammer instead of the MIM. As I said before the -4 is the most desirable of the series and it's really up to you as to what it's worth. New retail list on a -4 was $607, a current model is $932. Can they be found for less, of course, there's always someone who got a better deal on everything you'll ever buy!

If they are not MIM they are a great imitation of MIM, upper back portion of trigger is not solid like forged trigger, hammer is of the same material and the only thing other then MIM they resemble is case colored, but they may be I'm no expert.
Since side plate had never been off and it was not my gun I didn't open it up to see the clock work and clean and oil the gun. If it was a N frame I be showing pictures of my NIB gun, but it's a little L frame and I have two Dan Wesson's in 357 and they fit my hand properly because they are N frame size guns.
Think I'll take the 610 5" out tomorrow for a few rounds of plinking.

n You are funny Shakespeare.
What is crazy is the price used and pre-lock guns will bring. Me I care less about the lock since a member here sells a plug, but if I have to pay $700 to $1000 for a new revolver, I want a blued trigger with my blued gun, and stainless with stainless gun, but it's a looks thing for me.
But I would not buy my neighbors gun for $400 because it's an L frame, I would go $800 if it was an N frame gun. But it's not, so I'm not interested. I'm still looking for a 610 4", and MIM and lock is not a problem, but I would love to find an older gun w/o the MIM parts and lock and would give more for one of the 610-2's then I would a 610-3 just because of looks. And I could care less if its been fired or even has box and papers, it is going to be a shooter like my other two 610's.
