I have a line on a model 65-3 with 3" barrel and smooth rosewood grips.
It's marked NYSP and has some wear, scuffs on the barrel and finish worn off the grips. I checked my 3rd edition bible and there is no info on this thing.
Can someone verify that the NYSP were issued this model, and is there anything special about it compared to the standard model?
What do you think its worth?
The gun was issued to NYSP Investigators (Bureau of Criminal Investigation [BCI]) in 1981. The gun it was to replace was the Colt Detective Special/.38/snubby. There were objections by some because of its size and the those who objected were allowed to continue carrying the Colt. The gun was phased out in favor of the Glock 19 in 1990. I carried that gun from 1981 until I retired in 1987. They were issued with rubber grips - don't know if the grip was contracted with S&W or they were changed out after delivery. I have an identical 65-3 in the safe, without the markings. Unlike the 10-6 in .357 and the 520 they were - to the best of my knowledge - no different than any other 65-3 you could buy at the store.
