Default Anyone have a 442 or 642 Pro w/ Moon Clips?

Howdy,

Anyone have one of the 442 or 642 Pro Airweights cut for moon clips? I've been thinking about getting one for an on-duty BUG. I get the impression the moon clips would make qualification a lot easier and as I understand it these Airweights don't have the IL, always a plus.

So, anyone have one? If so, what do you think about it and any pics would be great.

Thanks!

I ordered one from Smith back at the end of the year on the 40% military promotion. Gun was made in Jun and shipped 31 Jun 10. I wasn't in too much of a rush as I'm in Astan and left for leave 1 Jul. I picked it up and ran about 30-50 rds thru it. It functioned with and without the moonclips. Gun came with 3 full moon clips made by TK Customs, who doesn't recommend Starline or Winchester brass. Also came with 2 ILS keys (not needed, just added in the packing process) and a cable lock. I had just given my DIL my one HKS speedloader and a Galco IWB holster a day before I picked it up. Did order a Uncle Mikes paddle holster to carry it in around the shop when home. On the moon clips, first four rounds just snap in but sitting the last round I had to press down on it on a solid surface. On removing the first spent brass is also a chore, suggest a demooner. Besides using the moonclips, speedloaders, loose rounds you also have the option of the speed strips for which ever mets your backup ammo carry needs (I also carry a ammo wallet in the backpocket with shotshells as I have lots of copperheads around the house).

Is that an after-sale customization of the 442, or is the revolver available that way as a model?

For a CCW, that's just what I'd like to have.

I have the 642 Pro. I decided not to use the moon clips so I could do top off reloads with a speed strip.
It's nice having the MC option though.

I got the 642 pro cut for moonclips. I've carried mine for over a year. I really like it but never use the moonclips except for carry - you only get the three, S&W has never had them in stock and, if they did (and they won't), they would cost you $8.42 EACH. Someone else mentioned that TKS makes them. They sell them for $32.50 for 5 plus shipping. They're hard to load/unload and to spend any time with them you'd end up with $100 worth of moonclips into a $400 gun. So, I'm not messing with that. But I do like them for CCW purposes.

The PRO series 642 comes cut for and with three moon clips. That's 5 in and 15 more ready to go which is about 4x more "prepared" than statistical reality dictates you need to be.
The moons work GREAT if you understand HOW they work, and load them accordingly. I refer to snapping rounds into the clips.
Buy the PRO series and use the clips...

Hi Landric:

While not a Pro Series, I have a Model 642 with a cylinder from a Model 442 that had been cut for moon clips by TK Custom. I purchased the Model 442 cylinder from a fellow Forum member who is a LEO. I carry the piece loaded using the moon clip. I don't carry loaded moon clips for reloads (too bulky and fragile) relying instead on speed strips for reloads.

Best of luck,

Dave
