Default Post your favorite S&W revolver GRIPS

I was curious what your favorite S&W revolver grips are, let me hear
from you please. Let's see pictures and name the brand and style. Factory, aftermarket, wood, stag, elk, rubber, plastic, anything goes.
I am looking for new ideas for S&W revolver grips, mostly J, K/L & N
frame S&W revolvers. I know about the S&W factory grips, Eagle, Badger,
Ahrends, Stag, Elk, & Hogue. Let's see those beautiful grips guys!

Here is my small choice. Here is my 442 with a set of Altamonts on it. Next is the same 442 with it's present grips, a set of Crimson Trace LG-105 Laser Grips. They aren't as pretty, but they sure help old eyes hit what they are shooting at. I still have the factory rubber grips. I switch them as the urge hits me.

At the present time I will leave the CT grips on. The 442 is my EDC.

I like the T-Grip and factory style stocks on vintage revolvers but most of my frequently used handguns have Pachmayr grips. My 625 and Ruger GP-100 have "Grippers" and "Compacs" on the j-frames. My lone set of fine grips are these Ahrends SB Retro Combat in oil finished Moradillo.

Relatively new to S&W revolvers and entering the hobby as a broke middle-aged returning to school student, I'm in no position to play with the big boys and have not yet acquired any guns worthy of beautiful stocks like Cokes, Ropers, Kuracs, etc., but I feel lucky to have come across an old like-new set of Tyler "butterscotch" Tru-Fit grips that turned a rather plain 64-2 into a pretty sexy-looking little snubnose. The material is some sort of synthetic called Ivorex, from what I've been able to research. The company is apparently no longer around (initially I assumed it might be the same Tyler making T-grips but I've not found anything stating that is the case). They're fairly thick and combined with the grip adapter, feel as solid as a target stock and balance the little, yet heavy for its size, K-frame well.

My current favorites are Executioner grips from Patrick Grashorn both in Elk. 48-4 in back and 28-2 in front.

In second place, I like the look of these on my 19-3. Altamont 'bonded ivory.'

OK trenchgun, here is one grip lovers story. While scrolling the listings of a large gun dealer I was smitten by the grips on this Smith. I wasn't looking for and didn't need another .44 mag. I noticed the listing stated, " the one in the photo may not be the exact one you get. But you will get the same make and model." I called the dealer and told him if he had the Smith in the photo I would buy it. He said they had sold several but he would go and see if it was still in the inventory. You know the rest of the story.

No pics, but it completely depends on the gun. I really like the factory S&W wood combat grips, they look fantastic and are great on all guns except the .44 mag's, IMO. I really prefer Hogue monogrips on 44's.

Snowbandit,
You might want to call them with your order number and check on it.

I called and ordered three sets of these this morning. The FedEx tracking number has already been E-mailed to me and I expect the package on Tuesday.

My newest set, courtesy of S&W for 48.00. Lit the snubby 657 off last evening. Was really surprised at how well they handled the 18 210 gr. Speer Gold Dots and was really happy with my light reloads. Was wearing Ahrends before this as the factory combats are nice looking but are absolutely horrible grips when it comes to a hard recoiling magnum. A good sanding session does help but ruins their value. I like em very much. They are great CC grips as they are thin width wise but very secure to hold onto.

Thanks exfebee for the line on them!

The new Altamont grips aren't too bad, slim profile is good for CC.

I like to keep them with stock factory grips, to some of my my "shooters" I added T-Grips. I have tried a lot of the "exotic" wood grips but ended up going back to Magnas and Targets. I tend to experiment more with "bling" on my grips with my Rugers, of course many of my S&W's are beat up ex-PD guns, so a set of $200 Nil Griffe grips wouldn't be right on a busted up looking Model 10.

I know one thing, I can't stand rubber grips on a revolver. Sure they may add "control" but I'll keep shooting with wood.

What's the deal with these?
I want a pair! Are they available only to selected insiders? is there a secret, unlisted stock number?
A special code to enter in the S&W voicemail?

Secret, Unlisted S&W Stocks?

What's the deal with these?
I want a pair! Are they available only to selected insiders? is there a secret, unlisted stock number?

My 625-3 NEEDS these..

Sir,

I found out about them on the "N Frame grips on a L Frame post" in this area of the forum. Called S&W Customer Service with the info from the post I mentioned for the unadvertised grips and they had two pairs left. I wish I would have bought both as they are FANTASTIC for the 52.00 which included shipping IMS. Last I heard they were waiting for more to come in. They are made by Altamont(sp) for S&W. They look way better in person and so does the 657. I just suck at taking pics.

These grips looked like thay would hurt. I had to trim the screw as it was to long and slapped em on and commenced to firing it on the firing line for an evening qualification shoot. It handled the snappy Gold Dots with ease. My light reloads felt like shooting a 4" 686 with .38's. Very secure grip and the 657 points well with them. There is a gap on the bottom of the backstrap if you look at the pics. Was concerned about that but after firing it with the magnums was really surprized on how well they fit my small hand and absorbed the recoil. I can live easily with that gap and the price is way better than the way overpriced combats.

I'm going back for another pair for my 6" 57 thats getting my version of a Jovino makeover. I abhor the S&W Combat Grips for shooting hard recoiling rounds as they litreally chew my hands up and the FG's do not fit my fingers. These on the other hand fith like the proverbial glove.

Your already beautiful 625 will look fantastic with these! That is my next S&W BTW. Tom Turner has a beautiful 25-2 that he made over and it's a beaut. Happy shopping and please let me know via PM if they have any left.

I ordered a set of the ones Altamont is making for S&W and didn't like them at all. They're a round to square conversion style that just doesn't fit my hand well at all. Sent them back and got these combat magnums in rosewood. Much better.

I use a Passport shoulder holster for scoped handguns, works for the 627, and the SBH.

I am only doing this because I customized these stocks myself. They started life as checkered Herrett square butt stocks. I sanded out the checkering, and removed the back bottom to fit round butt. I wish I had the "original" untouched photo still. They sure feel good in my hand. Bob

My favorites are these cut down coke grips I found in a gun shop junk box. They were homely yet felt great. So I had forum member Gaiterbaiter clean them up, rechecker them and refinish them. now I have a pair of custon coke boot grips on my 27-2. They are perfect on this short gun but look too stubby on longer ones, including 4". Also found were a pair of chopped beat up K frames, pictured here, too.

After...

Thanks for resurrecting this old thread! So many great looking grips!

I'm taking delivery of my first 686 next week, and I will be replacing the rubber grips with some sort of wood grip as I love the look of wood. Can someone please comment about their experiences with the classic target grips versus Hogue wood grips? I love the look of the target grips...love the classic look! But I know I will probably like the Hogue wood grips as that is what is on my Ruger GP100. I'd appreciate hearing any observations, experiences etc. in comparing target wood grips versus Hogue wood grips.
