Default Ranier Ballistics Plated .500 Mag slugs

I'm wondering if anyone has experience using these slugs in the .500 Mag? I don't think these slugs have cannulure marks on them.

Midway's price is very attractive at $89.99/500 and am considering them for plinking loads but was concerned about getting an adequate crimp.

Any comments? Thanks, Don.

Don,

They'll shoot just fine at modest velocities. I cannelure them as well as any .50cal bullet that doesn't have a cannelure. If you remember, I made a cannelure tool that will do just about any bullet available in any caliber. Pictured below is the tool I made with a Speer Gold Dot 50cal bullet.

You've basically got two choices. Get a cannelure tool from Corbin or use a set of Lee FC dies. A regular set of roll crimp dies just doesn't provide enough crimp and the bullet will pull. Yes, they are cheap bullets, but combined with Trail Boss you get lots of fun.

Thanks for the useful recommendations, Del. Didn't remember the tool but it looks like a nice piece of work. Don

Keep in mind these plated bullets are not intended to be loaded above about 1150 to 1200 fps.

Thanks for the comment (not joking), that's the realm Ranier talks about on their site. I'd be using a Trail Boss load so it would be lower than 1100 fps. Don
