On the stainless steel S&W Model 60 and 66, S&W first used real stainless hammers and triggers.
They were not satisfied how the parts wore, so they quickly changed all stainless revolver hammers and triggers to a hard chrome plated finish over standard case hardened parts.
The plating was to prevent rust and so the hammer and trigger would match the rest of the gun.

Sometime in the late 80's or early 90's, S&W eliminated the plating as a cost savings. These later guns have standard color case hardened hammers and triggers.

Early 65-5s still used the flash chromed trigger & hammer. Late 65-5s used the standard case hardened ones. My later 65-5 had a MIM trigger also.

My 65-5 appears to have the original run of the stainless hammer and trigger.

In New Mexico (where you are), I'd say $425 . . .

S&W only used real stainless hammers and triggers on the early Model 60 and 66, no other models.

Long before they got to the Model 65 the parts were flash hard chromed over case hardened carbon steel.
These hard chrome parts have a satin gray color that's noticeable different than the true stainless of the rest of the gun.

Sounds like exactly what my hammer and trigger appear to be.

Sorry for the delay in replying: I've been on vacation in Hawai'i. I've taught the legal portion of some classes, but you might have just seen me at the range.

Glock1911,

This weekend is the ABQ gun show. There should be a gentleman there [I personally do not know him] who over the last 4 guns shows has a clean table with nothing but solid, clean handguns set up in wood or plastic stands. He always has some nice, older Smiths and at one show he had a M65-? 3 inch for about $450.00...I should have bougth it but didn't.

You may want to go to the show and look for him he might have another this time.
