I own an M&P R8. The rails that come with the revolver are described as "picatinny style" - does that mean they are true mil spec or are they Weaver? I've not gotten a straight answer from S&W. I'd like to mount an optic but I'd like to make sure I have the correct and/or best fitting base. I know I can mount a Weaver to a Picatinny - but it's still a compromise. I appreciate all info you've got.
It's Picatinny "style" because there are (very) slight difference(s) from the 1913 rail specification. The same rail is on the M&P9/40/45. I've got a TLR-1 light and the Streamlight 1913 rail key makes it fit perfectly without slop.
Brownells has several makes of Picatinny rings and an extremely generous return policy. Find something you like/can afford and see how it fits.

I plan to mount a Trjicon RMR and the bases come in just two flavors: Picatinny and Weaver. Because the S&W rail is not a true mil spec Picatinny -- I guess the Weaver is the only choice.
I don't know if it makes a difference - but the rail I was referring to (not so well) is the removeable top rail for the revolver. I know the bottom rail happily accomodates a Surefire light.
