I'm not sure how "rare" the 3" 66-2 is, in and of itself, but LNIB examples are probably few and far between. It was evidently worth quite a bit to someone.
IIRC there were just under 5000 3" 6-2's produced. Very nice....in fact perfect do everything well revolvers. But not yet 2K revolvers, again IMO.
I won't part with either of my 3" 66's. Hopefully they will continue to appreciate at what appears to be a very nice rate! Regards 18DAI.

I watched this auction from its inception.
Either the non -rated winner is not very smart, or just has very deep pockets.
Another somewhat surprising fact is that the gun was shot
The auction advertised LIKE new in box.
As this one ended another well known seller put a 3" -3
up for auction with a $1500. buy now.
Here we go, ,either things are going a bit crazy ,or ,
my collection just passed my 401K in value!
Good luck ,Allen Frame

Which PRE LOCK/MIM revolver would be the hardest to get and the most valuable in 98% + Condition:
1). 3 inch 65
2). 3 inch 66
3). 3 inch 686 CS-1

3" 65's are rather common, locally anyway. For $500 a nice 3" 65 is easily purchased on the internet gun boards as well.
I'd opine that the 3" 686 CS-1 is the rarest of the revolvers you mention, and hence the most valuable. Less than 4000 of those remain extant as near as I can tell.
The 3" 66 being the next in line as far as difficulty to obtain, and more valuable than a 3" 65. No idea how many true 3" barrels were produced, but I would give an educated guess at between 7500 to 9000, comprising the -2, -3, -4, and -5 variants.
Personally, owning examples of all three you mention, I prefer a 3" 66 to them all. Regards 18DAI.

Someone had a bad case of "gotta have this one" gun fever. Wow.
Agree with 18DAI, the CS-1 is the most expensive. I'd say it's a tie with a 3" 66 as far as demand. As far as a using gun, the 65 would get my vote.

I really like 3" k-frames. I can't imagine any circumstances in which I would pay that kind of money for one.

The three inch Smith's are some of the nicest revolvers out there. I own several, with my 586-4 three-inch revolver a personal favorite.

I just surfed gunbroker. There are two more 3" 66's that are over $1000 already. One is a 3" 66-2 the other a 3" 66-3.
Must be a run on 3" 66's this month ??!!? Regards 18DAI.

I bet that the 'New bidder/unrated' doesn't come through and that the gun gets relisted. I have heard that there are certain sellers (not implying anything about that seller) that create alias ID's on the auction sites to bid up their items.....maybe just my paranoia, but it could also be some other kind of funny business going on there....maybe he lost his own game of chicken?
Maybe I need to start selling guns there....I have a 99% model 28 that I could get $1500 or more for

Great minds think alike there 18DAI! I have the 3" 66-2 and the 3" CS-1. The 66-2 would be the LAST S&W EVER to leave the safe. I think it'll be in my Alessi shoulder holster when it's my time to go:-).
I would not pay that price for it though. $275.00 was alot of money in 85.
66-2 with Ahrend Boot Grips

last week, a very mint 3" 66 with original box & cleaning kit sold for $750 @ Guns International, Antique Guns, Collectible Firearms, Used Guns For Sale Online
they did not give the dash #, but it was either a 2 or a 3. i called for more info, and quite possibly purchase, but it was already spoken for, and the lady on the phone knew nothing about the gun.
this letter states roughly how many 3" 66s were made. i wish it would have been more specific about how many -3s, and -4s, had been produced.

Neat gun, but I don't think it's $2K neat, hell, I don't even think it's $1K neat!

My thoughts exactly! I have a mid-'90s vintage 3" F-Comp (PC Model 66), and a 3" Model 65...both great revolvers, but not worth $2K!
The mind boggles...

There is a gunshow coming up in November in my area. Think that I will walk around with a sign around my neck saying "3 inch M66-2 for sale, best offer" and see what happens

A trick on GB told to me by a dealer friend is the cross bidding. A dealer sets up a new account and over bids on another dealer's gun. They do this back and forth to get people to believe that prices are going up. Then under another account the same model gun is placed for sale with a buy it now price. The sucker looking to buy saw 2-3 auctions go for 2K and grabs the buy it now at $1,500.

The really rare 3" 66 is the Super K...300 made...I have it and the limited Lew Horton 3". The configured, ported barrel on the super K has to be seen to be believed how neat it is!

I bought my 66-2 3" NIB in May, 1985 and it has a serial number prefix of ADH, product code 102712. Were there some earlier 66-2 3"bbls than the Ashland series? BTW, my records indicate I paid $300 for it.

Interesting! Before this one the lowest prefix I have seen was AFZ. I haven't seen an AER but a lot of AHJs and AHLs.
What's the "Spec Ord:" number?
By the way, welcome (back) to the forum!

The seller will probably have to use most of the money to buy a new digital camera, he may have worn out his current unit on this one gun. That, and a new ultasonic cleaner.
That gun looks better than when it shipped, but.............. $2,000?

Interesting ,my 66-2 serial prefix is AFK ,and the julian date is 5108
which would indicate a build date of April 18th. 1985. 5 days earlier than
a seemingly earlier serial prefix.
Regards , Allen

clif58,
Go to Amazon.com and order yourself the latest edition of the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson. It will be the best $25 you can spend.
It will tell you the changes made in each revision. From there you can decide which revision you would like.
As best I can tell, dash-2 eliminted the pinned barrel and recessed cylinders (P&R), dash-5 went to the frame mounted firing pin and MIM parts, and dash-6 added the internal lock.

My P&R 3" 66 (no dash)
I posted pictures of this last week. I am still not sure if I paid too much at $700. Some say yes, others no. Either way I have an unusual gun.

I just bought a Model 66-2 3" in a local shop that an older Gentleman had just brought in. I am still not quite sure it was ever shot,( I am assuming it was) but if it was it was shot very very little. The gun is absolutely flawless with box and all toys. Got it out the door for 595.00, and as a collector of three inch guns, I knew the planets were all lined up for me the other day. I considered it a gift at that price.
