Default Gun Show find w/pic! Model 10-14 used

Went to a very small gun show today, almost gave up, didn't see much in the way of wheelguns......but then, this was sitting in a seller's case and it emitted a ray of light from it, as I have been lusting after the latest version of the Model 10, the 10-14.

In decent shape, it's seen some holster time and even with spent brass in the chambers two of the chambers don't carry up into lock up in slow single action......doesn't seem like it's been fired alot, maybe just not broken in, maybe I'm seeing the face of the "new S&W" I don't know yet.......it's a "CJT" prefix, my SC of S&W ends at 2004, and no CJT is listed in the serial index, so being a 10-14 it's at least post 2002, if anyone can help me nail down a year I would sure appreciate it!

Marked at $350, no dice for a deal down on price even for cash, guy said he was as low as he could go, With tax and BS fees I got it for exactly $375 OTD, not too bad I think..........a guy wanted $340 for a NIB Taurus 65, I think it's a no brainer which was the clear choice

I have looked at the same thing. It is marketed as being one of the "Classic's" guns. It looks just like the same Model 10 from a couple of years ago that came with the Uncle Mike's grip. Now it comes with a "Diamondwood" grip. I may not be spelling that the same as they do. All I know is that it looked like pretty cheap laminate to me. Some of the classic's look pretty good (ignoring the IL) and some of them just look slapped together. Just my 2 cents.

The model 10 is a nice gun, then fit nice in the truck, boat, tent, backpack and the front pocket. It is the first hand-ejector in the K frame, older than the 30-06 round. The first one was a round butt and then a few years later went to the square butt - then back to the round butt. Enjoy your new revolver (to me I call them toy's)and keep a good coat of wax on her and she will last for ever. Oil out in the truck during the winter will rust.

I am trying to find more info on the latest Model 10's.....it seems S&W stopped making them for a couple years and then revived the 10-14 as the "Classic" with the new wood grips. I like the round butt profile, I may keep these grips on or find some older Magnas.

This 10-14 looks kinda slapped together, the barrel is cocked to the left a bit, and two of the chambers have late carryup. For $350 I can live with it, if I had to guess I would say it only has a couple hundred rounds through it, it hasn't developed the white circles around the chambers yet, and the drag line isn't fully "developed" yet. I plan to run a few cylinders through it tomorrow, if it puts all 6 in a group, doesn't spit and nothing falls off of it I'll be happy to add this to my collection of 10's.

The 10-13 is an oddball, there were only 38 made and it was kind of a "retro modern" re-introduction of the 1899 M&P. Looks like I can cross that one off my list, my goal is to collect all the post M&P Model 10's from '57 onwards, at least one for each dash number but I can forget the 10-13!

It went from the standard lineup to the Classic section, has been made every year since the first year. May not be big numbers in the amount made.

Test fired it today, shoots pretty well with 158 gr. .38's

It has some sluggish carry up in 2 of the chambers, in slow DA it stops short of lockup and "just" locks up in another chamber. Seems a little too much was taken off 3 of the ratchet legs, the other 3 chambers carry up and time perfectly. Might have to make this the first one I send off to S&W for a tune, because it's a newer one I feel better off letting them work on it.

For the price involved, I would rather have an "Older" Model 10.

It's actually some irony, my "Older" Model 10's are what drove me to want to own some of the newer stuff.

My first M&P was a beater Victory Model which I still have, then I got a 10-5,a 10-10 and later got a 64-7, my first "dreaded IL and MIM" S&W which turned out to be an awesome gun. I had been looking for a 10-14, and this was the first used one I had seen. For $350, although not a "steal", I had cash in my pocket and I wasn't about to walk away from a Smith I had been looking for!

I guess I'm one of the few who thinks the new S&W's are OK

Default S&W 10-14 - is it the same model as the "Classic Model 10"?

I'm thinking of becoming an S&W owner for the first time, and the Classic Model 10 (Product: Model 10) is what I really want. But according to the hand gun roster in CA, only the 10-14 is legal, and I just don't know if the 10-14 is the same as this Classic Model 10? Thanks in advance for your help!

Yes, the 10-14 is the same as the "Classic", the Classic is still a 10-14 it just comes with Dymondwood grips instead of Uncle Mike's. Same exact gun

I may be wrong, but I believe that gun is late enough to be covered by the S&W lifetime warranty. The crooked barrel and carry up problem should be warranty items, with S&W picking up the shipping as well.

Wouldn't hurt to give them a call.

Thanks for your report, including your range impressions. Don't know if you found the gun is shooting entirely to point of aim, the lateral aspect of which relates to barrel clocking.

I would think a trip back to S&W in order, to go over any barrel clocking and carry-up issues, so that this Model 10 can serve you and your family for the next 100 years!

Regards,

Dyson

I did contact S&W some months ago, but decided to fit a new extractor star myself, for $35 I corrected the late carryup on the two chambers, and was able to sell the used extractor to a guy who wanted a spare for $10.

Despite the slightly cocked barrel this 10-14 is a tackdriver. I put in a lot of aftermarket parts......Wilson Combat springs, extended firing pin, the gun is super slick and shoots like a champ. I don't claim the 10-14 to be 'better" than the old guns, but it is just as capable and easier to "work" with no need to fit or tinker. Just drop in parts you can get at MidWay or Brownell's and anyone can "tune" a MIM S&W. No need to break out the jeweler's files, rouge, sandpaper, fitting block, etc.

FWIW I also have several 1905 4th change M&P's, several other 50's era M&P's, a Victory, and many 10's ranging from 10-5's to 10-10's, besides this 10-14. I am an overall M&P/10 enthusiast, and the 10-14 fills a niche in my collection. I plan to buy another 10-14 and leave that one bone stock.

Hi,
That is a fair price for your 10-14. I have one too with the uncle mikes rubber grips. I bought it on gunbroker with the box and papers. The final cost was $315. This is my only interlock S&W. But the revolver shoots accurately and I have had no problems.

Enjoy yours.

I've got an "older" 10-14 with DAT prefix and of course the dreaded lock. It was a NY DC gun and well worn but a great shooter. I picked up another 10-10 Dept of Corrections gun at the same time so I'd have one older and one newer. They were $336/ea w/service holsters and two speed loaders. They both have nice triggers and are my favorite range guns. Enjoy it!
