These photos make me miss my Model 57 and Ruger Blackhawk. I always wanted to find a Marlin lever gun to match calibers with those guns back when I had them. Never found one, and now some of you guys post pictures of several Marlin .41 mags.

I picked this one up yesterday. Thanks to forum member Catman253 for doing the transfer.

Funny thing I just noticed on this one - the serial number indicates a 1988 build, but the sleeve says ISO 9001 since 1993.

I bought this S-series 58 from the son of the original owner. These grips came with it. I've got some regular magnas on it now...

Excellent find, 41collector. Not too many of those around. In fact that is only the 2nd one I've seen a photo of, have never seen one in person. The other one on GB came from a collector that I knew of, but had not met yet, and unfortunately he had already sold that one to FF by the time we did meet.

I am duly impressed, some folks would like to think the .41 Mag. is not alive.
New grail gun,one like G-Macs S-series Mdl 58.Reminds me of the Colt 357 Magnum.Love me a unshrouded ejector.
I will be adding 657-0 6.5" next week,Have Ruger Blackhawk 7.5" .41 Mag. and recently purchased "Classic 6" Blue 57 got it for a song.$729.00 OTD.

Well I got around to taking a family photo....here they are.

I am very happy with the .41 and never feel undergunned when using it over a .44. My compliments gentleman on your impressive collections.

Here are a couple of my 57 "no dash" revolvers. The 41 Mag is ny favorite caliber... I collect them, I hunt with them and a 6" 57 was my duty gun in my younger years....

Default .41 Mag - The Thinking Man's .44 Mag

Great thread, beautiful guns pictured. For what it is worth, here are my four .41s. Top is standard Ruger Blackhawk got it used for $300.00. The engraved nickled 58 is an old San Antonio, TX PD gun. Factory letter says shipped to SAPD in 1974. Nickle and engraving are after factory but very quality job. Grips are elk antler from Eagel Grips. Got it from Pawn Shop in TX for under $400.00. The blued 58 is an "S" prefix SN. No factory letter yet. Got it at a CO gunshow for under $400.00. The buggered up 57 is a "no dash" with nickled trgger, hammer and cylinger thumb release. Barrel is 5" and it is round butt. (Collectors are rolling in their graves). Got it in a CA gunshow in 1987/8, traded straigt across for a Colt, Series 70, .38 Super I bought at a military Rod and Gun Club in Korea for $109.00. I shoot factory 220 grain and 170 grain for hunting but have worked up a lead SWC 210 grain load at about 900fps that is contollable in fast DA strings. Love 'em all, although, I mostly carry a .45ACP now days.

Keep Shootin'

PS if anyone can tell me how to upload full sized pics, I'll listen. THX

Default One hard working 657

This is one of several 41 Magnums I have, but the most interesting I think. It started off as a 6" Model 657. I had Austin Behlert shorten the barrel to 4" and the job he did blending the original front sight base with the rib is truly amazing. You have to really look to see the seam. I've shot this gun so much over the years that the cylinder had to be refaced, the barrel turned in one turn to set the B/C gap and the forcing cone recut. It's a tack driver with a superb action. The grips are Spegel Extended Boot Grips in Makassar Ebony.

Iggy,

That gun is beautiful. It has history and has to be a sentimental revolver.
Here's my trio minus the 58 I haven't taken pics of. Waiting on my stag grips for it and will take new pics as I also replaced the 657's grips again.

That old 57 at the top has 37 deer to it's name and 38 may be added this weekend if we do right. The .41 mag is a knockdown round extrodinaire!

KO, I remember when my 58 looked like that one of your Dad's. I got mine in 1966.

13 years and a million miles in holster took some of the "purty" off of mine.

Still the smoothest action of any revolver I have ever owned.

I took it out shootin' last summer for the first time in nearly 30 years. It was like puttin' on an old sweater. I'm not as fast or as accurate as I use to be, but I wouldn't want to be in front of the two of us even today.

I got hooked on the .41 by shooting and reloading my uncles 8.375" M57 back in 84'. I then bought myself a 6" M57, then a 6" M657 with a trigger job by Mr. Clark, then a 6.5" M657 Classic Hunter, a few M58s and a hybrid 58 barrel and cylinder on a M29 frame (friend desired a fixed sighted .44 Mag). Only have one of the 58s left. I'll be looking for another long barrelled Smith when I get home next year. Non Smith .41s that I still have my 20" Marlin 1894S built in 87/88' and a 14" TC barrel. Picked up a Ranch Dog TRL411-255 6 cav mold for the Marlin earlier this year. Can't wait to cast some heavy boolits for them.

Beautiful pics, everyone! I had (and stupidly sold), a nickeled six-inch 57 back in the late 70's. Any concensus on which is the preferred barrel length on this revolver? I've never had a four-inch N-frame, but they look awfully handy, and I found the six-inch 57 to be a bit heavy. Are the shorter lengths a lot harder to handle (recoil and accuracy)? How about versus a four-inch Model 29?

I have three inch, four inch, six inch, and an eight and three eighths inch guns.
Can't pick a favorite although the shorter ones are easier to carry in the woods.
The long one shoots awfully well. It does not appear to approve of missing at all.

Thinking back to somewhere around mid 1978, the brother in law was being ridiculed by a fellow worker, who thought that he could out shoot anybody and everybody with his snub nosed 38 spl.

They both agreed to a bullseye match at 25, 50, 75, and 100 yards, respectively.

The brother in law arrived at the match with a new T/C Super 14 in .44 Rem Mag caliber, using factory 240 gr jacketed ammunition.

No matter how well the challenger could handle his short barreled 38 spl revolver, the superior sighting plane, superior sights, and rock steady aiming of the "big" T/C handed an easy defeat to the challenger.

If Your needs dictate a fast & handy revolver, go 4".

Want to shoot the wings off flies at 50 paces? Go with 6" or 8-3/8" for recoil control and a better sighting plane. Of course, a real hot rock shooter can likely do just as well with a 4" gun. Practice, practice, practice.

Hey, look what just came in today!

I've long wanted a 6-inch nickel Model 57 but, earlier this month, settled on a fine looking 6-inch blue gun, found for a nice price on an internet firearms auction. After the seller received my payment he called me back, remembering that I had said that I really wanted a nickel gun during our previous phone conversation. He was letting me know that, if I could wait a few more days for shipment, he would have an equally nice nickel Model 57 that he could send instead. Well, of course I was willing to wait.

The serial number indicates that it is likely a 1976 gun.

Default New Shoes

Just received these new style grips from S&W for my 657. I absolutely love the feel of them, their looks and am looking forward to blasting some Speer Gold Dots off tonight. Always gathers attention on the firing line with magnums. Also very docile with a LSWC at 750 fps.

Model 58 with stag grips coming soon.

Some beautiful revolvers and guns folks. I'm a proud .41 mag fan. It CAN do everything the .44 can with the correct bullet and load. I have 4 .41's and now am down to zero .44's. The 3" 657 can be a handful. Had a 3" 29 and 629 and decided to stay on the .41 train. If you saw my earlier post the 6' no dash 57 with sanded grips is my sentimental favorite going back to 1976. It has 37 deer to it's name over 33 years and still is a tackdriver, but my eyes are slowly going south. Used to be able to hit a pie plate at 100 yds. on a regular basis. It's going to be my variation of a Jovino revolver soon with a 3.5" barrel, new C&S sights and a crane lock up front for the heavies.

Where is the drool button! Beautiful with a capital "B"! Missed it earlier.

My model 58. The Herrets were the best I could do so far but at least they are refinished. How do you like the Hi Viz front sight!

Nice Model 58, and a very nice set of old Herrett's - probably very comfortable to shoot. Go with what works for you !

A bad picture...but my two.. a 57-1 and a 57. I am toying with the idea of getting rid of them. I would really like a Model 58 for a base to a custom revolver and another Model 25-? chambered in 45 Colt.

Here's a different one I just picked up.
Product code 170114
3rd Edition Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson says "Run of 25?".
There is also postcard in the box saying thank you for purchasing a Lew Horton Special Edition.

Default No way to post pictures, but

I have several: 4" 57 nickel that I shoot quite often, because it is freckled. Also have a nib 8-3/8 nickel, a 6" 57-1 blue that is scoped, and have a 657 MG, as well as the custom shop 657 Light Hunter from the late 90s. That is just the Smiths... I also own a Redhawk in both 5-1/2" and 7-1/2", and a Freedom Arms 654 Silhouette, with a 10-1/2" barrel, five shot unfluted cylinder, and FA ISGW silhouette sights.

I think that is all of them, but I recently sold a 657 Classic Hunter NIB, as wellas my 8-3/8" blue 57 no dash in presentation case.

Of course that is the first .41 Magnum I ever shot and it started me down that slippery slope of .41 Magnum love

Been there done that! I carried the 58 for 13 years. Then the Patrol issued Model 66's and said we had to carry them.

I had been in 4 serious social encounters, and I din't want no pip-sqeak .357 if I got in another one. I quit and went back to ranchin'!!

You were way better armed with that 58 than any .357 mag IMO Mr. Iggy. Especially out west where help can be far, far away.

I just added a model 58 to the .41 mag collection. I let the first one go out of stupidity back in 85. Now I need a Mountain Gun in .41 mag that I let slip through my fingers.

That was back in '64 that my Dad was trying to convince the MSP to at least move up to .357 Magnum from .38 Special. He was invited to the Captains meeting to discuss the pros and cons of the .41 Magnum or .357 Magnum; vs. the .38 Special. After his presentation all the Captains recommended getting the Combat Masterpiece .357 Magnum.
The Asst. Chief was not convinced though, and continued on with the order for Mod 10 4"HB and Western 200gr Lubaloy ammo.
I don't recall of hearing of any "serious social encounters" in the next 16 years so that worked out okay. Finally, in 1980 they were issued the Model 66 and turned in the Model 10's.

...some really nice collections out there...! And great stories...

Consecutive Serial Numbered 6" Nickels...unfired.

The "pair"...of 1980s Class As...

I just wanted one engraved M57 and found the blue one first...then a few years later the nickel one came up for auction and since it was a 1980, along with a standard blue 1980 that I've owned since 1983 I went for it....

This is the 1980 S&W that was my second 57...this was 25 yards back in the day when the eyes were a little sharper..

Best caliber S&W ever chambered a gun for.... :-)

I've shot this gun so much over the years that the cylinder had to be refaced, the barrel turned in one turn to set the B/C gap and the forcing cone recut. It's a tack driver with a superb action. The grips are Spegel Extended Boot Grips in Makassar Ebony.

Very nice. Can we see a close-up of the fitting Behlert did of the front sight ramp?

Good Evening, Gentlemen.

As a hard-core .41 fan, I have really enjoyed perusing this thread!! Well done, to one and all, for sharing your great .41's with the rest of us fans!

I have "more than a few" .41's, but only one .44. My .41 stable includes an American Derringer, too, which is a REAL handful to shoot with heavy bullets!! It's the only gun I've ever fired that, upon pulling the trigger, felt like it was going to come back and smack me in the forehead!! YIKES!

I bought my first .41 back in 1986, in Colorado, from the owner of a nice little gunshop. It was actually his wife's gun, a nice Ruger Blackhawk New Model, 6.5" barrel. He sold it to me for just $180, and after I shot that gun, I've never looked back!! Love the caliber, and the guns that shoot it!! I'll try to dig out a few of mine, and post photos here.

I have to credit some of the old gun writers for convincing me that the .41 was "enough" gun for must anything that needed to be done with a handgun! Amongst them were: Evan Marshall, Dick Metcalf, Skeeter Skelton, Frank Petrini, Bob Milek, Dean Grennell, and a few others who wrote glowingly about the .41 magnum. I've been hooked since that first one came to live with us, in '86, and I don't see that addiction changing anytime soon. Thanks, again, for sharing your great .41's, and God Bless!

Every Good Wish,
Doc

This is my 657 PC with a 2 5/8" bbl. I use it for a daily carry piece with 175 grn silver tip hp. It shoots great hits hard and kicks less than a 357 in my opinion.

You need to nickname that gun "AB", meaning "All Business"!! It don't look like its meant to impress your girlfriend!

Marshal 357,
This forum has many 41 Magnum lovers. I must count myself among them. The problem for those of us that have been enjoying the cartridge for several decades now is that keeping the photo album up to date is very difficult. I have somewhere over half of mine photographed, perhaps 3/4 and never find the time to do a new family photo.

I traded Lee a new classic 22 in nickel for this at the Richmond meeting. I sent it back to Smith to be renickeled. Now it is too pretty to shoot.
