i traded a Shield 9mm plus $150 for a 657-4. i wasn't really looking for a 41 mag but i had been wanting a S&W revolver for a while after owning a 1911 E, SDVE40, and the shield. great guns but not what Smith and Wesson's claim to fame. i think i got a good deal out of it all in all.

Like your guns. Never have seen grip adapters like your on "N" frame guns. I have a 58 I bought in 1974. Still looks great and in box. I picked up a nickeled one after that because it was the first nickeled 58 I'd ever seen. Then got really lucky and came across a blued 58 marked SAPD. Unfortunately only my original gun has correct grips. Shoot the SAPD the most since it's not quite as good of shape as the other two guns. Like them all. Would ask if anyone knows if Jon Jovino or Lew Horton on their 3in model 57 cut hammers and smoothed triggers with the grip cut to round butt K frame size. Have one of these as well but wonder who sold it. Any information would be appreciated.

picked this up at the Berea Ohio gun show a few months back. It was on an obscure corner table of a private collector. He was complaining nobody has even looked at it,nobody wants a 41 Magnum. I happen to be looking for a 41. He had a table price of 725,I asked him what's the lowest he would take to get it off his table right now,he said 700. I would have grabbed it for the 725.
1980,pinned,recessed,nickeled,MagnaPorted.

About a month ago I picked up a 57-1 that no one wanted locally. The rounds are $2 per in the city so I took it off the owners hand for the high price of $389. I go outside the city to buy ammo so it's significantly cheaper and I'd also like to get into reloading. Here she is pictured with my Python, I was watching magnum force that night so I had to bust them both out.

A little late to the party, but I made it!
My two S&W Model 57s in their glory. Superb handguns. I've had the 6-inch for some 30 years and the 4-inch for a couple of years. Both good shooters. Reliable. They've been on a lot of adventures with me.

Holy smokes, Smoke... that Python could use a little TLC, methinks. What kind of load do you use in your M57? If you get into reloading a bunch, it will really make shooting the .41 Mag a lot of fun.

Thumbs up

Not sure how I missed this thread all these years but I'll add my two. Picked up this 57-1 a few months ago.

The 2nd year 57 I've had for several years.

Question, can you actually use the HKS speedloader with the target grips without damaging the grips finish?

I finally get to post in this thread! I just got my beater 28-2 back from being converted to .41mag by Mark Hartshorne a couple of days ago. He did an outstanding job.

I've only had time to run one quick cylinder full of 175gr Silvertips through it at about 10 yards. It shot straight and the recoil was very manageable, it's a bit muzzle heavy so that helps. Hopefully I can give it a good wringing out in the near future.

Nice shooting. Do you reload? If you don't, 41 Magnum is a good reason to start.

Is this a titanium cylinder or just a custom finish on it?

Default Currently my only one

This is the first big bore gun that I bought when I reached legal age to do so. All I had fired before this were rimfire handguns. Shortly after buying this gun, I also bought a Lee hand reloader and started reloading for it.

After many rounds of ammo through it and many hunting trips with it on my hip, I decided to have these elephant ivory grips made for it. I purposely asked for a part of the tusk with some "bark" on it so that the striations would be visible on the grips.

I think they look great, but they are not the best for shooting anything but the lightest loads because they are so slippery. After a dozen or so heavier loads, the bottom of my trigger finger will be bleeding from contacting the trigger guard. With the wood grips, this doesn't happen.

I am currently having a .41 mag built for me for use as a hunting gun (the Ruger was my backup gun, not my hunting gun).

It's a titanium cylinder, Numrich's had them for $87! They may still have some, I haven't checked. The barrel is a 4" M58 barrel cut to 3", Mark made the front sight.

Nice thread.

Missed it when it was originally started.

Here is my 657-3 Classic Hunter I posted on another thread today.

For some reason, a LGS has a large stock of 41 Mag ammo. Including some Cowboy loads that would make good range fodder.

Time to get this back out and shoot it.

I Think I may have the 41 Magnum virus.-657-3-jpg

...man...in looking over the guns I posted over the last seven years...many are now gone...

Ruger seems to be the only handgun company keeping the .41 alive... The last two .41s I bought were both Redhawks..one 4" and one 2.75". Ruger now has stainless Blackhawks in 4 5/8" and 6.5" as well as a 5.5" Bisley...

Took a woods walk yesterday and brought the Taurus 4" Titanium Tracker...you forget you are wearing a gun let alone a .41...

Default 41 Magnum

This is my one and only 41 Magnum. It's a model 57 no dash, completely original. Made in 1977. Came to me in the original presentation case but no plain blue box or outer cardboard box. All the paperwork is in the bottom of the case.

From what I have been told it is some what unusual to find these presentation boxes with the yellow tabs still present which are used to easily remove the bottom blue insert.

This is my favorite caliber to shoot. It always gets a lot of looks, at the range when that thing goes bang.

My only 41 magnum a Model 58 , late 1969 , one of the last S series before S&W went to the N series in 1970.
Was carried by a close friend an Officer with the Baton Rouge Police Department. He was a motorcycle cop with a big Harley Davidson and he wanted a weapon that could shoot through a car door....the 38 specials the department issued didn't do that too well, so he went with the 41 magnum, which was touted as "the perfect " police revolver at that time.
He retired, sold it to me with the black Bianchi Sam Brown police rig thrown in .
I removed the beat up factory grips for safe keeping, it wears Ahrends Retro Combats in Cocobolo for now. We go dancing as often as we can.
I have pictures but can't remember how to post them...will get help when wife returns. My avatar is the my model 58 .
Gary

Seeing that numrich still has some Ti cylinders, it makes me want to hunt down a 57 or 58 in need of some love and make a lighter woods gun.

What would a clean, nice 6" 657 no-dash bring these days?
