S&W Model 64, New to me!
I just picked up an S&W Model 64 today, after my two day wait (actually worked out to five before I could get back to get it). (I had to get the anger out before the STATE would let me have my new aquisition! Didn't matter that I've already got a few others on hand anyway!)
I went to do a little shooting Monday and there was this nice looking 64 sitting in the display cabinet. I asked to look at it and was smitten. It was in extremely great shape. Locked up nice and tight on all cylinders. No marks anywhere, except the cylinder ring, that were worth even commenting on. Showed virtually no wear anywhere. So, I dickered a little and got it for $300 +tax.
He let me shoot it, even though I couldn't take it home until the requisite wait period had expired. It shot beautifully. After I got used to it, it was putting the 158gr lead RN in nice tight groups at about 30 ft, and just a little high and left. Probably me more than the gun.
Maybe I could have found one as nice for less. But this one was there, and I could verify everything about it with my own eyes and hands. And my local guy stands behind it, even if used. I'm happy.
So, my beautiful M-66 now had nice companion.

Ok, S&W made millions of the Model 10 and it's variants over many decades. And they did that for a very good reason. It was an excellent firearm.
Now you bought the same gun in stainless. That is the frosting on the cake.
Great gun design, great cartridge, great quality and all that in user friendly stainless steel.
You did good and the price was spot on.
Congrats,

Congrats on your Model 64.My first gun was a Model 64 that was owned by a Westchester County Sheriff. The LE Armorer put a Bull Barrel on it and I was able to pick it up 15 yrs ago for 175 dollars. It doesn't see that much holster time now as I usually carry my Model 640,Colt Detective Special or my CS9.Enjoy and God Bless.....Mike

My last two purchases were used Model 64s, a 4" heavy barrel and a 2" snub. The 2" version is really neat and I intend to use it as both a pocket gun and match gun.

Nice find, good price, I have a 4", it's as smooth as glass, and an amazing shooter.

I also bought a Model 64 yesterday. Shot it today. Very happy with the gun. It is already becoming a favorite. I did a little better on price for mine but I think I also overpaid a bit for a 629-3 I got at the same time.
I am pretty well decided I will focus my S&W accumulating on stainless steel guns for the foreseeable future.

64-2 snub sometimes does nightstand & CCW duty. Gotta love those K-frame S&Ws!

Does anyone know what other police agencies other than the NYPD issued the 64?
Great pickup, btw.

I bought mine - a 4" 64-8 resplendent in it's MIM hammer & trigger as well as the IL - two years ago. It was ~ the same - $309 OTD - and an unissued/unshot (Two dirty chambers - from S&W, I expect.) security company trade-in at my local pusher's. It - and the new 4" x10 617 I bought 9/08 - are tied for my saddest purchases... I should have bought them earlier! Talk about fun... the .22's are a real fun and frugal round, but nothing beats the little bump from even a mild .38 - and seeing the wadcutter holes in a paper target - or hearing the metal plates ping - or actually seeing them drop.
Of course, mine was the usual path... .44, .45, even .454 Casull. The ammo/moola I wasted! Ah, but it was fun. The 64 is real fun... my regrets actually are that I didn't get two - what a neat plinker - and a fantastic house gun. Congratulations on your buy - now shoot it in good stead.

My wife and I both NYPD 20 plus years. Me, a dept issued model 10, her a dept issued model 64. No matter how hard I try I can not get a model 64 into my pocket for a pocket gun. Are there different 64's then hers, her barrel measures 3 inch. Also, " local pusher " refers to ?
Thanks

"Local Pusher"
32sgteot. "Local Pusher" is your local "friendly gun dealer". Sometime we should all post what our acronyms mean. Kyle
