Already found a nice SS smooth trigger on GB, but I can't seem to find a hammer. I would like to get a bobbed hammer for it. I was told they never made SS hammers for this model. Any suggestions? Thx.
Surprised no suggestions... Well I made the decision last night to send it to ROBAR and NP3 the whole gun, bob the hammer and put an XS "Big Dot" on the front sight. Shipped it yesterday, can hardly wait to get it back.

When you do get it back, be sure to post photos. It should be a real winner!

Even though mine is a .357, I'm never going to shoot those through mine.. I've chosen to carry the, .38 spl. Hornady Critical Defense in std. velocity, still over 1000 fps. I feel there will be better control for follow up shots and won't get blinded in low light conditions. That and I have a couple other J frames around the house only chambered for .38.

Speer's 135gr SB Mag is well under full power but still a nice jump up from the plus p version.
It handles quite well in a steel J frame.
The SB Gold Dot seems to get respect people who have used it.

Best,
Rick

And the only one I still own...

e: Went back to the stock rubber grips on the 638. The T grip/wood combo looks sexy as all hell, but for some reason I really shoot it better with the rubber. Oh well

I haven't checked in for awhile. Nice bunch of Js fella's, thanks for sharing.

Waffles

How do you like the clip on your J? How well does it work & does it interfere with reloading & does it stay in place? I have thought about getting one.
Thanks.

I know there's a lot of dislike on the principle of them, but I loved mine. It didn't interfere with anything, and held the revolver in place securely, and most importantly disappeared. All the big chunky leather and some kydex holsters cause too much of a bulge for me.

The counter argument to these is always the lack of a trigger covering, to which I reply I have my belt and pants covering the trigger, and the J frame requires such a deliberate pull I can't imagine anything actually setting the damn thing off by accident.

The only legit problem I have with it is that it clips to your pants, not the belt. If you wear the gun at or close to a belt loop, forget I said anything there won't be an issue. If you wear loose pants and wear it away from a belt loop, it does sag a bit with a steel J.

It's great for making quick trips to the store and I wouldn't hesitate to get another.

Not a J,

But close enough! I like plastic guns and plastic holsters! This is my rig if I'm not carrying a Glock 23 & spare mag. LCR with reload is 1.1lbs, the Glock with reload is 2.5lbs. The laser is also a great asset when shooting from unconventional positions, such as retention.

Default Model 51 DOB

Hello fellow SW enthusiasts! I have a real nice SW model 51 with serial # M3XX. Anyone tell me when it was born?? It also has a 22lr cylinder with it, target trigger, laser, target hammer and custom horn grips. I'd appreciate it if someone can fire off to me the DOB. I'd appreciate it. Capt. John

Thumbs up

Four + years after the fact, John's original thread still resonates. Nothing better than a J-frame for CCW.

My 442-1 got me back into revolvers after a several year hiatus. Out of nowhere I found myself shooting little revolvers quite well. I suppose the years of terrible first shot DA work with autos may have paid off.

20150109_135938 by Slick_Rick77, on Flickr

The last purchase was the 649-5. It's quite smooth in double and 3lbs even in single. A Pachmayr grip conceals easily enough and makes magnum shooting fun. It's been THE IWB gun since purchase.

The 442/LaserGrip combo is perfect. It too has a silky smooth trigger and the CTC grip absorbs recoil nicely while still being slim enough for easy pocket and ankle carry. It is very entertaining to shoot, and while the intention was to put more miles on the 649 it hasn't worked out that way. It shoots well enough to earn me an INTERNET SNUBBY MATCH win.

In their usual homes:

Here's a "J" that you don't see too many of any more, since they were discontinued in 1991. This one was made in 1981, in the days of "pinned and recessed." It's a Model 34-1 22/32 Kit Gun, in the deluxe version. It has all the bells and whistles - red ramp front sight, white outline rear, semi-target hammer, nickel plating, and smooth rosewood stocks. I suspect this configuration is comparatively rare, and in this condition, even more so. It's one of my favorite "safe queens."

John

Actually, you need to brush up on your Spanish. That translates to "Registered Trademark" of Smith and Wesson.

At one time, I used to date Pat Pending. She was a knockout in her day. At the last class reunion . . . not so much.

M640 no dash and her bigger brother, M60-10.

Two of my favorites.

I love the way this 638 carries in a front pocket. She's currently wearing some Crimson Trace LG-405 grips which have a little padding on the top of the backstrap.

"It's OK to like the J..."

Here are my J-frames in a picture I've posted before.

Clockwise from top right: 642-1 current production "post-lock" 38 Special +P; 640-1 current production Pro Series 357 Magnum; and a mid-1980s model 60 "no dash" square-butt in standard pressure 38 Special.

My most carried J frame is my blued Model 36 that I bobbed the hammer on. Nothing real special but I really love the gun as it is easy to carry and doesn't snag. My J frame I love the most is my 940 3". Only problem with 3" J frames is finding holsters for them.

Done cleaning the finish deficient 642-1...

Also cleaned the other carry, a M36 from the mid '60s with a nice set of Executioner elk bone grips.

Default My Little Monster

I only have one so far, my 360. I love this little pistol. I passed on a nickel plated 60 a few years back and I've never seen one since.

There will be more J's in my future, that is certain.

Glad to see this thread getting used again.
I really like the mod.49s, an exellent way to overcome hammer snag & not loose SA capability.
Thanks for sharing.
