New model 49 no dash
Just acquired this little gun at a local pawn shop. Some faint freckling, faint turn line, functions fine. It joins a New Departure 38 SW, Double action 44, two victories, and a model 59. All fine guns for their era and purpose. Two questions; Are the grips actually Smith and Wesson (They do have the medallion), and with a serial of 12Jxx what would be the approximate year of manufacture? Thanks for all. Like this thread.

Just got this little guy a few days ago for my carry gun. I have been wanting to carry something when I go out and have been wanting a 442, just so happened I guy I know wanted my rifle and wanted to trade his 442-2. Came with a holster too.

I only have two j frames. But I'm a big fan. The 36 I bought from an MCSO deputy who was retiring. He had carried it as a BUG but the hammer stud broke on it. Was able to fix that and it fills my little niche in my modest collection as my "classic detective" gun.
The 640 is my BUG at work and my main off duty carry. They're a good pair

I've never seen original S&W stocks quite like that. I can tell you they are not J-Frame stocks. They are friggen HUGE!!

I'm not so sure.
They look awfully similar to the round butt combats the factory issued in '89, except they appear to be for a square butt.

I finally got my hands on a forged hammer .357 640-1, a nice example I might say. Now I know why I've been through 8 or 9 snubs...none have been in the Goldilocks zone of 23 oz weight, 2.1" barrel length, DAO and J frame deep concealment, until this...wow.

I have always been intrigued by the looks and idea of a model 49 or 649, but have one question. If used as a pocket gun, is there a need to be concerned about lint and other crud finding its way inside the action, through hammer slot on top? If so, would you need to remove the sideplate to clean it? Or is this not a concern?

Between my son and I, there are six or so J frames in the house. As a poster mentioned, several years back S&W made an unwise decision to go to the Magnum frame for all the J's . It wasn't needed for the .22, .32 or .38 Special versions, the regular J is a more elegant frame IMO.

Last year I had a 640 Pro and a 340PD no lock, but had to sell them. My new 640 Pro just came today...I might get another 340PD for my wife, but I much prefer the Steel models.

Nope....but I wouldn't carry change or small items in the same pocket with any revolver. I can't think of a single time in 45 years I've ever had to remove a side plate to clean a revolver because it was carried in a pocket.

Early ".38 Chiefs Special Model New J frame of 1953". That's the official description; mine dates from 1955, and includes the Sambar Stag grips.

My first and only J, picked up this past February. Model 637. I removed the hammer lock and intend on changing the grips to something wooden and fancy. Absolutely love this little piece.

For comfort and control, my two favorite grips for my three 637s are the:
Altamont Combat grips in Super Rosewood
and the old vintage:
Herrett Shooting Star conversion grips in Walnut (the grips on the 1993 640 in the previous post).

For the purists, this is a "back to the future" J-frame. It's a nickeled Model 40-1, incorporating the grip safety of the original Model 40, but designed for +P ammo. It's strictly a holster gun as presently set up. Look, ma! No ugly hole for a "safety!"

My humble submission... The "J" frame is a CQB gun but with practice can be a very effective 25 meter gun too especially when you get good at staging the trigger & hammer. It took me a spell but 95 times out of a 100 I can go from DA to SA without any use of my thumb...
Please ignore the "D" frame Colt...
My (2) most carried J's coupled with Tyler-T's...

I know this is an old thread, but thought it better to post here than start a new one. I like the older J frames that had much nicer finishes of a by gone era. Maybe some people can post up pictures of nickel plaited air weights, or polished anodized finishes.

I’ve started rotating my carry gun more frequently now but still carry my 640 no dash. I bought it new around 94-95 and is one of the guns I’ve never been tempted to sell.
I also have a nickel 37 and have considered carrying it but it’s too nice to bang around and scratch up. Another one I’ve considered carrying in my model 32-1 Terrier in 38 S&W. I know it supposedly a wimpy cartridge but I reload the cartridge and can push it a bit harder and get it closer to 38 special. It certainly is a sweet little revolver though.
I had a 442 for a few weeks and although it’s a great gun I just didn’t warm up to it. I’ve been tempted to buy another and try again but not sure it wouldn’t be a waste of money.
Not Smiths but I carry a Ruger KCP often now and from time to time, especially when traveling, carry a Colt Cobra or 3” King Cobra. The King Cobra is in a special class all it’s own in my opinion. A 3” barrel is a great compromise between snubnose and almost full size.

I just found this thread for the second time operantly. I can’t believe I didn’t post before. I alway liked revolvers and for years only carried J-Frames. I still carry one in my pocket every day.

I've read through this whole revived thread and I'm convinced that J frames are "gateway" guns like people talk of "gateway" drugs. Never in all my life did I think about revolvers. Then I got a 642. Then another one. I have a 642 on me from the moment I get dressed until I take it off when I go to sleep. I absolutely love shooting those little suckers.
Now I spend all day thinking about the next revolver to get. I want a medium frame 357. Probably a 686. I could, maybe, justify it to myself and my wife in that it's a great woods gun, even though we don't really spend THAT much time in the woods. I also want a classic model 29. Why? How could I possibly justify a 44 magnum??? Well, I just want one, probably because I watched Clint Eastwood back in the day and never forgot it. Is that enough reason LOL?

I have an engraved 640-1 and a 642 with stag grips. I would really like to post pictures, but I have no real understanding of how this computer stuff works. Brain damage is a horrible thing.
