Looking at a 581 no dash that is pretty clean with non original grips. He is asking $750 firm. Good or bad deal ? Thanks in advance.

Not common; when's the last time you saw one locally? So the real question is what's it worth to you .....

If it's gun you've been looking for it is not a terrible deal because you don't see them often.
If you are not a 581 fan, I would probably pass if he didn't come down $100 or more.
If it's been re-blued (purple tint), it's just a shooter and overpriced

If in excellent mechanical and good cosmetic shape I'd say it's worth about the asking price of $750. While it will never again have the original grips, you can find proper pair online. Is it a bargain - NO. Is it a rip-off - NO.
Personally, I'd look for something original in great shape with the original accessories. It might cost a few hundred more but you will have a real original and won't have to start looking and spending more money for the extras. At the end of the day it's worth it to do it right the first time. Been there - done that! Just my opinion of course.

My Dad's 1946 M&P was reblued in the 80s and it's got some Plum coloring.... but so does my 39-2 slide that's still new in the box.

Hello, $750 in this climate may be a bit high but if you really want it get it you won't be disappointed. Love mine, one of the best trigger actions on my revolver collection.

Not an exceptional deal but not a bad price in today's overinflated handgun market. Go out and try to find another one. I haven't seen one of those for sale in any type of condition locally in the past few years. If in good mechanical condition and not a lot of wear, I would go for it. If you are looking for one that is new in the box or in excellent shape with all the accessories and just to get it out and look at it now and then, that one is going to be harder to find at anything close to a reasonable price these days. In the past 50+ years of collecting and using firearms, I don't think that I have ever had a firearm that I didn't use, usually very hard and I don't get one with a view towards how much profit I can make on it by selling it years down the road. A lot of people collect guns they don't shoot as investments and that's okay. Just depends on what you are going to do with it. Good luck with your decision.

Good but not great deal. As others have said, not a common item. If I ran across that deal locally I'd probably buy it. Online would be a pass.

For me, that would be a buy it now price, unless I could tell for sure it's re-blued, in which case I would walk if he stayed firm.

I would buy at that price. You won't be disappointed.
I paid more for a very nice no dash back in February, but I had wanted for years and had never encountered one locally.

Sometime last year my gun show partner picked up a ANIB 581 W/O the M overstamp for $500. He passed it on to me for a $50 profit. Ever since he has talked about buying it back. Told him he could have it for what I paid but it's still sitting here. I'm really in to fixed sight magnums and he is more of a lever gun guy. If I put it in my case I would probably ask $750-800. It would sell pretty quick at $750.

Your gun show partner got a smoking deal on that particular gun, even a year ago! Not many vintage Smith revolvers in great shape in the box of any model number going for $500 these days, at least the ones I can find. Being in the box and almost new, it would not last until the end of the day after being put out at $800 in my area. 581's are pretty hard to find these days. Lucky man!

I have two 581s, no dash, no M that I picked up over 15 years ago at gun shows. They are both in excellent condition. One is blued and one is a from the factory nickle job. Both are very accurate and have sweet smooth actions. I would not sell them for the world. Given the price of guns today, unless you are a collector and not a shooter, that $750 sounds reasonable for what you will be getting.
