I'll pass, much too gaudy. Had this been a 3 1/2 inch blued steel with all the attributes of the original Registered Magnum and a subtle roll stamp on the barrel I would be salivating.

I like it, except for the lock, but I might be able to live with it. I wonder how much they will be charging for it though.

It's a shame they did not do the short barrel that is so popular.

Will probably cost more than a nice original 27.

Very nice looking gun. I have a hard time getting past the lock, but I do like it.
I wonder if this would be a good investment gun?

Investment gun? Hard too predict but traditionally, commemorative guns aren't much as investments. All other things being equal (unfired, box and all papers, etc.) standard guns appreciate as fast or faster. This one, with the internal lock and MIM parts and a probable high initial cost, likely won't be the road to retirement luxuries.

I agree with everybody...if they just made an exact copy of the original one they would sell more. No engraving, rolled logo instead of laser engraved, pinned barrel and recessed cylinder, no internal lock, forged hammer and trigger, nice wood stocks...just take us back to the original that everybody loved and we'll buy one. Not a flashy copy using the modern manufacturing techniques. B

Oh goody, another "Classic" that other than at a glance is nothing like the original. I second all of the above in what was said already.
+1 for the effort
-1 for the final product
p.s. does anyone really like the laser engraved logo instead of the medallions they should have??? No likey...

Waaay too many nice originals out there to bother with one of those. By "originals" I mean M27, 27-2, pre 27, maybe even up to and including a 27-3.

Model 27 Not Laser Engraved
I have to correct one thing said in the above posts about this gun, that is, the engraving method used is machine line engraving, not laser engraving. I have one of the recently done 4" Model 29's with machine line engraving, and one of the Model 640's with same said engraving, and other than it not being as deep as hand engraving work, it is still quite nice looking, and seems to me a suitable and affordable treatment for these new "classics", if you like engraving, of course. My guess is this 27 will msrp for about $ 1,300.00, which should mean a cost of around $1,000.00 in most shops.
Hell, if I can find one I'll buy it. Anybody know anything about the production schedule for this model 27?

MUCH too gaudy. I'm with scooter 123 on this one. A deep blue 3 incher with a tasteful rollmark , AND NO LOCK would have made a statement......

I would rather have another holster beat dinged up 4" 28-2
When I first read the title of this thread I got excited, thinking maybe S&W was making a "real" Model 27 for the 75th Anniversary.
I mean, come on S&W, at least humor us with recessed chambers......maybe even put some kind of a fake cosmetic-only pin in the frame, would it be that hard?!?
They need to stop trying to crank out these "commemeratives" to make $3K each on them and just give us a REAL re-introduction of the guns that made them great. I would buy a new S&W Classic if it in any way resembled the originals I have in my collection.

BLECH! What a shame, a P&R no lock 3.5" without the engraving nonsense would have been very hard to pass up; this: not a chance, no way.

Look at the barrel checkering on the top and on top of the top strap. My $$ says it's a cheap laser engraving like the other "27's" they're producing.
Engraved checkering makes the 27 for me.
I'd look for an original.

A manufacturing business will only stay in business as long as it can sell things at a profit. When asked "What is this new item FOR?", the honest answer is, "It is to have something to sell!"
This gun is being produced with little extra cost over the current base Model 27 Classic. The differences, the engraving and the stocks, are both simple machine-made additions. 500 of them will sell out, if not to the folks who love the traditional, pre-1980 Smith & Wessons.
I wish S&W would go back to recessed chambers, pinned barrels and delete the lock, too, but I guess they are doing what they think will sell them the most product at the largest profit margin. Probably the largest part of their customer base either doesn't know the difference or wouldn't pay for the difference. We here on this site are probably a small part of their potential customer base. I don't buy much of their new stuff any more, but I am glad others do so they stay in business.
I am curious what it would have cost, per unit, to do traditional looking Target stocks, P & R and no lock? The costs may be higher than we realize. Perhaps, for example, I bet the ratchet/ejector assembly would have to be completely different for recessed chambers.
Still, the .357 Magnum's introduction was a milestone in handgun history. An authentic replica may have sold well even at a higher price point.

Looks like one of those "replica guns" that are not able to chamber a round and fire........for demonstration purposes only.
Might look better in the hand, but....................... nahhh.

Sorry but IMHO it looks like S&W tried to do an anniversary model using cheap mechanical engraving and that lawyer lock really needs to go! It sure is far from a Wayne D'Angelo engraved piece. It's too bad craftsmanship and product pride seem to be a thing of the past. I guess that is why we all seek the older pieces. Collector value probably won't be great with this one.
