Default "F" Stamped on cylinder

Newbie here.....so sorry if this has been asked before. I recently purchased a pre-lock 5" 610. The cylinder is stamped with an "F", and the crane housing is stamped with an "S". Help a new guy out here and let me know what the heck these mean.

The F I don't recall seeing and have no idea except possibly a fitter's stamp.

The S in the barrel lug means the part is Stainless Steel. This is usually seen on the barrel, frame and cylinder. It is to identify the material, as when polished stainless and carbon steel are not easily distinguished from each other.

BTW, it is Yoke. Colt's have cranes. Just a nomenclature peculiarity of the brand. Just like S&Ws have Stocks, not grips.

Just the other way around, Colts have stocks, but Smiths are allowed to have grips.

Hate to tell you - colts don't have jack and Smith & Wesson has "STOCKS" not grips. Been that way for over a 100 years .

I've got an "F" stamped onto the cylinder in my 66-2 also? Does anyone know what that means?

S&W supposedly stamped the F on the cylinder when they stopped counterboring the cylinder(recessed case heads). Why they chose "F" is anybodies guess. "F"ull length cylinder, "F"inally a smart move, "F"unny this took so long to figure out.....who knows? Someone, somewhere does I'm sure.

You may have a good point. Maybe it means "F"lat to distinguish them as an un-counterbored variant for a model which formerly had a counterbore. They are, after all, interchangeable.
