Default Let's See Those Dirty Guns!

OK, enough already with those perfectly preserved safe queens all shined up with Renaissance Wax.

Time for some revolvers that get dirty - often. They work and work hard.

I will lead off with this one. Just back from the range. 400 practice rounds today through this 625.
My other 625 has open sights and gets used just as hard.

It gets carried and fired often but always cleans up nice.

This is not my gun, and I don't recall where this pic came from, but I saved it because I've never seen a dirtier gun:

Not too dirty, but it's first 150 rounds without a wipe down. Next time, it gets dirty PPU ammo

My 442 gets fired anytime I go to the range and is with me at nearly all times.

The first time people saw these linty pics I think some folks were upset. I clean it up about once a week so it gets a bit gritty in between.

I think I'm going to shoot a cylinder of 22LR thru my 43C tomorrow. From what I've read, I should have a picture to post here tomorrow......

Perhaps a brick or two would suffice.

Dang that is dirty. 2 weeks ago I took the Chapman Academy Intro again with a revolver. 600 rounds in one day. My Ron Powers custom 686 looked like yours. 2 years ago I took the Chapman Academy Advanced with my then new DW VBOB. Put 500 rounds through it to break it in. Then another 1,500 rounds through it for the 3 day class. Never cleaned it for a torture test. No malfunctions. Sure was dirty. No pics. Complete strip & clean.

I should have read your post earlier today because I JUST finished cleaning my Colt Gold Cup 1911 which was rather dirty due to a 3 hour stint at the Range this afternoon. Unlike revolvers the Autos tend to look cleaner on the outside but get really yukky inside. I shoot 230 grain RNL re-loads in mine and the wax they put in the groove burns a bit dirty. Two out of the three Ranges I belong to do NOT allow the use of jacketed ammo indoors.

Lead cast bullets, Lee liquid lube and Unique powder. Very dirty load but I've been using unique for 30 years and have good loads worked up for all of my pistols. I've standardized on it and see no reason to change. I buy one powder for all my pistols.

From the last IHMSA match:

625 PP

A couple of hundred rounds of cast and swaged bullets since the last wipe down and this is all it could manage, sorry!

Not all that bad, as far as I'm concerned, but haven't anything else recent. Usual dirty revolver champ is the 4" 617, but it hasn't been sucking down bricks of ammo for a while!

Default Dirty gun

Usually I do not take photos of my guns when they aren't cleaned. There is only one photo that I have of a "dirty" revolver.

It is to prove that I am not merely a collector but shooter of Korth revolvers and appreciate their performance more than looks and quality. The thought of having a fine firearm and not shooting it, is lost on me.

It is commonly known as "revolver hand" syndrome. That is what I look like when I use Alliant Bullseye ( if I find it again ).

I GOTTA ROLL WITH jaymoore ON THIS ONE. I HAVE SHOT MANY HANDGUNS IN OVER 50 YEARS OF SHOOTING, BUT NOTHING GETS AS FILTHY AS MY 4" MODEL 617, WITH THE 10 SHOT CYLINDER. I HAVE AN 8 3/8" WITH A 6 SHOT CYLINDER THAT STAYS MUCH CLEANER. THE COPPER PLATED AMMO, LIKE CCI MINI MAG, SEEMS TO SHOOT THE CLEANEST.
SORRY, I DON'T HAVE ANY PICS……….

Great thread. Refreshing diversion from the normal light box and wax displays. Not that I don't like those, it is just nice to see some of the work horses get their due.

Usually the lighter the load the dirtier they get. The hotter loads burn all the powder up. Bullseye seems to be one of the more dirty powders, but you can sure make some good loads with it.

That's just over 400 rounds worth that day if I remember correctly, and I had wiped the gun down a couple of times! I was given several cases of that particular ammo, the guy who passed it on couldn't stand it. I'm not averse to cleaning guns but that stuff is next level dirty.

I took the pictures because it was so unusual, glad y'all enjoy it.

LOVE 'EM!

I never thought about taking pix of them dirty. Worst handgun: my S&W 329PD after 100 down-loaded lead-bullet hand-loads. Thing looked like a two-tone black and white.

Dirtiest of all was a Thompson M1A1 after a match where I had to borrow some ammo from a guy who believes in moly coating. The gun was blue/black, my hands were blue/black and my face was blue/black. Don't want to even THINK about my lungs. Huge clouds of smoke as I was shooting.

Taking pix of them is a great idea. Now on my to-do list.

Thanks, everyone!

dwever, thanks for digging up this year old thread!! I was inspired last week to have a 44 spl day at the range. I had 850 rds loaded up and figured I'd get rid of some. I took the 3" kids out for a field trip. My 624 and 24-3.

I think we have a winner here.

I can't imagine getting one much dirtier than that - short of dragging it around in the woods behind a truck....

Then you have never shot a North American Arms Black Widow with dirty 22 rounds. I put 100 rounds through mine and the gun and my hand back to about 2 inches behind my wrist were pitch black.

Default Dirty

2004 S&W Model 617, 6 shot, 6"Bbl .22LR Hand Ejector.
Old picture, but looks the same, just got back from the Indoor Range.
Used every week. Defiantly not a Safe Queen.
