Default Criminal Minds - Dr. Spencer Reid - gun?

Does anyone know what the revolver is that Dr. Spencer Reid carries on the TV show Criminal Minds? I think it's hilarious the way he wears it way around front...it just adds to his character's nerdiness.

It appeared to me to be either a 4" 64 or 65. My teenagers favorite program.

I was puzzled as to his choice of holster placement as well. Regards 18DAI.

Maybe because earlier in the series he proved inept with Glocks.

Yeah, it seems his accuracy, or lack there of, and his carry position is a running topic on the show.

Appendix-carry is most often carried out with an IWB holster. It does have its detractors, but is an effective method of carry, allbeit not a popular one.

I recall he carried 2 different revolvers in the various seasons. In one season he carried a 2 1/2" 66 and in the season where he was shot in the leg he carried a 3" 64 or 65. He was very poor with a Glock but far better with a revolver.
Update: I just checked IMDB and according to them he carried a Glock 17 until the 4th season. There he starts carrying a 3" 65. I could've swore I saw him carry a 2 1/2" 66 in a few episodes.

I like that show, but Reid's nerdiness and appearance and that Garcia woman detract from its plausibility.

Nevertheless, it is among the best of today's TV fare

Maybe one of our FBI agents will tell us if Reid is a possible member of the profiling division. I think the Bureau now bans all revolvers on duty. But on TV...

As for favorite TV computer whizs, I much prefer Christa Sauls, on Acapulco H.E.A.T. to Garcia. Does anyone recall that show, from the 1990's?

I saw Criminal Minds last night, and the sheriff who shot his wayward son in the arm at the last had a Beretta M-92. I liked that. A Beretta is a gun. A Glock is just a shooting machine. No soul!

I don't watch the show, but T-Star is correct that there are NO revolvers authorized in today's Bureau. It is strictly Glocks, SWAT Springfields, and grandfathered Sigs.

That said, back when revolvers were authorized a retiring agent sold me a square butt Model 36 for exactly what he had paid for it - $110. A copper I worked with made sad eyes at me until I sold it to him for the same amount, since he didn't have an off-duty gun. That fella later came into the Bureau and got the little Chief put on his authorized list. Years passed, revolvers were made verboten, and my interest in Smiths grew. I called him and reminded him of the great deal I made him and offered to buy that little gun back, at a profit to him. He cleared his throat and said it was on his ankle as we spoke. So - there may be some still out there, but they sure aren't worn out in the open.

I did some more digging and in one episode of season two Dr. Spencer Reid either carried or used a S&W M&P Revolver later know as the S&W Model 10 personally I think that he should be carrying a model 10 all the time it was the premier Law Enforcement revolver for Many Many years.

I am also not that great with Glock or the 65.
That's why I usually carry a hand grenade.
And yes I carry it up front.

Episode "L.D.S.K" from early season 1 was on ION TV Tuesday. That's the one where he failed to qualify, but at the end shoots the unsub square in the forehead.

That show is my mind candy. Penelope Garcia can hack my system any time.

All of them TV cops carry it in front of the hip......That has to be very uncomfortable when sitting.......Personally, I'd rather the muzzle be pointing at the seat or floor than my femural artery.

Appendix carry has a lot of value, at least in some settings. However, that holster is complete clownshoes, and any instructor or FTO who saw it should want to apply aggressive remedial wall to wall counseling. I'm so horrified by it I have never give his revolver a close look.

BTW, a forehead shot is not reliable with a pistol - the target area for a frontal shot to the head is actually a face shot. Draw a triangle using the outer corners of the eyes and the bottom of the nostrils. The other oddity is that it is actually easier to teach reasonable fighting skill with most autopistols than it is with a revolver. Unless he is ND-ing, there would be some real drawbacks to having a revolver used by NDP.

Photos of "Billy The Kid" show a similar choice in holster placement. Evidently that works for some folks!

I've noticed that several SWAT members in these parts carry their sidearm anywhere from in front of the hip to full-on front, right next to the buckle, with (some cases exaggerated) rearward cant. Imagine a crossdraw holster moved to the strong side. Makes it easier and more comfortable to draw, especially with shoulder and wrist problems that the older crowd tends to have. I have mine on the forward part of my hip with a modified belt loop that pushes the muzzle end slightly outward while drawing the butt in snug, at about a 10-degree back cant. Very easy to protect while easy on my partly-torn rotator cuff and arthritic wrist when drawing. (Ah, the joys of aging....)
Incidentally, back in the old, old days, I had one of those Safariland revolver holsters with the rearward cant. Loved that thing...
