Thank you for posting this. I have a 4" 624 I bought about ten years ago. It has an AHBxxxx serial number. It is also marked inside the stocks with a July 1985 date, coincidentally my parents 25th wedding anniversary, which I think is kind of cool. Even if it were in the recalled series, I'd never send it in. S&W has no new products I'd trade for it right now.
I know I can shoot .44 Spls in my Magnums. It just ain't the same.
I recently bought a Lew Horton 624 with the 3" barrel. There was no box with the gun. The serial number prefix was ALVXXX which was in the range of the recalled guns. I was concerned about it being one of the recalled guns. I called Smith and Wesson and gave them my serial number. After a few hours, they called me back and said my gun was OK.
They can check your serial number to see if it was sent back and checked or shipped in a different time period.
There were approximately 500 guns shipped that could be affected that left the Smith and Wesson factory from January 1st thru June 8, 1985. Mine left the factory on June 21st 1985.
JUST A NOTE: The Smith and Wesson Tech I spoke to was very helpful and prompt getting back to me.

Reason: Correct spelling
I've got a few of the "recall" period guns, all given a clean bill of health or have box w/red "C".
Called S&W a couple of times and found it makes all the difference in the world who you talk to. First rep knew nothing about the recall and told me the gun was too old to research. Called back and next rep was very helpful, spent some time & energy to research it and give me an OK.
