L frame
A 686 is an L frame.....but can use the same grips as a K frame, just not the same holster (usually). Clear as mud?

The Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson would help you a lot.

One old-timer, older than me, explained it as the K-frame grip fit peoples' hands well but the frame did not stand up to the more powerful loads on the market and the L-frame was born to accomodate those loads with the same comfortable grip. Hope that explains it well enough.......

No such thing as any 686 ever built on a K frame. It's an L.
