Just bought my first S&W!!
I have always loved the look of smith and wesson revolvers and have kicked around the idea of buying many of their different models but always talked myself out of it or bought another brand because of price. Well not today! I bought a model 642 for $369.99 (I think thats a good price) and it has the $50 mail in rebate! Its beautiful and I couldent be more happy. I'm taking it to the range tomarrow and I'll let you all know if I'm still happy. It was a hard choice between the model 40, the 642 and the ruger LCR. The model 40 wasent availible for me to handle so at $669.00 that was out because I wasent willing to take the risk. The LCR was nice and was the same price as the 642 $369.99 and I was tempted. Its a neat design and seems very light, I was also tempted by the reviews I've read online that say the recoil is less because of the Houge grip and when I handled it I did like the trigger but......I just dont trust ruger. I have a MKIII and I love the looks and function of it but I took it apart once and I will never do that again. I'm sure their revolvers are different but when I pull the trigger on their highly popular sp101 it just feels far less refined than a S&W. The LCR I'm sure is a nice gun but when I held the 642 it was just perfect. Light, classic, best trigger pull on the particular one I bought that I have ever felt on a small revolver. I handled a couple different 642's at a different gun store but they dident have near the trigger that this one has. I also think the grips (I havent shot it yet) just feel much more natural and comfortabe in my hand than with the LCR. So considering all that with the 642 a little ahead of the LCR in my mind PLUS the $50 rebate that pushed the decision over the edge for me. The 642 is just a common workhorse IMO, a modern classic that you see everywhere, and the reason you see it everywhere is because it seems to me its the perfect carry revolver. Im happy with my purchase and like I said I'll post tomarrow how it goes at the range!

Very nice! The 642 is a great carry gun and should serve you well. In my opinion it is better than the Ruger in everything but the grips. The LCR has some nice soft rubber grips that seem like they would soak up more recoil but who knows...
Post up some pictures if you can

LOL! Understatement-of-the-Year Award goes to you, desertdweller! If ryland is like most, he'll be selling his 642 within a year to finance another S&W!
Seriously though, congratulations, ryland. You're going to have a lot of fun, no matter how many S&Ws you wind up "just having to have."

I'm selling off most of my rifles to finance more S&W's (and Rugers), I have more fun with the wheelguns than any of my rifles

Well hit the range today and dident do too bad. I hadent shot for a few months so I warmed up with my bersa .380 and did pretty well so then I took out my new smith. It was great! I started with slow fire at about 10 yards just to see where it was hitting. Aiming at center mass (the x) on a silouette target it was hitting about 4" high. I fired 10 rounds and had a roughly 4" group. Thats not very good for me at 10 yards but I was kind of moving my grip around to see what felt best. Next I moved to 12 yards and did a few speed drills. 5 shots in 5 seconds. All of my rounds hit in about the neck area. I then did 5 one handed shots, all high and three missed just above the sholders. I then did one more speed drill aiming a little below center mass and all of the rounds connected just left of the X I will see if I can post a pic of my target. Then I moved the target out to tewnty yards and did the same sequence but aimed a little below center mass. The results were great with only one barly missing the silouette. The gun shot great! The gun is probably dead on in the sights but I think I like to see a little more of the front sight with those little sights hence why all my shots were high. So now that I know that all I need to do is aim at an attackers stomach and all the rounds should hit the chest area.
The bad thing about this gun.....well with my shooting is I shot 50 rounds with my .380 and 50 rounds with my 642 and well the webbing of my hand is swollen. The recoil never bothered me shooting but once I left I noticed how swollen my hand is. Oh well this isent a target gun so I'll just heal for a few days and take it to the range again to perfect my shooting.

Congrats on the purchase, I have a 638 and love it. I have one suggestion to save your hands and get you to shoot the S&W more often. Buy a pair of Pachmayer rubber oversize grips for the range (not very expensive). Also, shoot at 3, 5 and 7 yards when practicing. This is where the gun is most effective. Nothing wrong with longer distances to test the limits of your weapon, but a self defense encounter will most likely happen closer and real life practice helps.

So here is a question. After I was done putting 50 rounds through the gun it was really dirt with powder residue all over the outside. Is this normal? Also my left index finger looked like the tin man because I had it for some of th shots pressed agaist the frame under the barrel is that normal? Seemed to be pretty dirty but I've never had a revolver this short or one that wasent blued.

The first one is from about 10-12 yards aiming at center mass and the second is at 20 yards aiming at the 8 ring. Both have mixed slow fire and speed drills fired at them. As my hand started to hurt on the second target my groups started drifting more left.
