serial # and spec ord...some confusion
i have a 686 with original box. someone is selling their 686 with the original box....both have the same product code
my serial # prefix, AYD...spec ord, 8062.
theirs.....AZB, 8057
earlier serial #, produced later???
is it common for this to occur??

Ordinal Dates
The "spec. ord." numbers are the ordinal ship dates.
8057 = February 26, 1988
8062 = March 2, 1988

Serial # is assigned to the frame when it is made, the spec order code denotes when the finished product was ready to ship.

The Spec Ord # is a Julian date. 8062 = "8" the 8th year, 062 = the 62nd day. This will be duplicated every ten years.

Is that for real?? Or are you playing on my ignorance? I have
a corner market on dumb, so I can't tell which is which!
Please reassure me, one way or the other. I had no idea that
S&W would use such a dating system.

Common! S&W did not use serial numbers in order. I have seen two pistols with the same product code but the THDxxxx one was 1102 and the TFMxxxx was 1113

It is for real. But...with everything S&W there are exceptions!
I have a pistol with a Spec Ord: 4444 and not even on a leap year are there 444 days.  Also, when is says SPECIAL in features, the Spec Ord number is not a julian date.
