What the heck was it !!!!! an unidenified cannon
Today at my favorite gun store there was a Model 629,3" brl, unfluted cyl,red ramp front, adjustable rear and rubber grips with a big lanyard ring. Nothing in current S&W catalog , except the Halo exclusive and that wasn't it
ANY CLUES ??? btw it was new in box

Maybe an special order by an importer. There are a lot specials around wich you cant find in any catalogue. Only then the one of the importer himself. For example AKHA in Germany.

It was most likely a Backpacker. I have one and it's a great revolver. It's quite accurate and it carries great in a pancake holster. Mine is my woods/fishing gun. We have had some black bear attackes in the area over the last couple of years and of course cougers.

Sounds like a Backpacker!
The Backpacker used to be an RSR exclusive.

My box for the Backpacker is marked "M629 44MAG 3 6SH UNFLUTED LAN" and the product number is 163409. My Serial is CHZ2***. My box is dated 05/30/07. It has no special markings on it.

Didn't buy it yet, still trying to figure out what it is, considering trading in my M29-3 6", Nickel is in rough shape and I have to many 6"ers. They offered me $350 which is 50 more than I paid. I got it thinking about refinishing it but ended up not loving the Nickel

If you don't have a 3" N-Frame you should give it a try. They are a pleasure to shoot with lighter loads. I don't like full power 44 mags in mine. Guess I'm a whimp . It's a powder puff with specials though.
